Can you mix 3 ring and 4 ring pistons? The world may never know!

Thanks to all for your valuable advise last week. (I had a piston/sleeve kit that came with 1 3-ring piston and 3 4-ring pistons.) Strangely, a couple of people I know, one of whom used to build race car engines for a living, said they didn't think there would be enough weight difference to throw the engine out of balance and if the top ring was in the same position relative to the top of the piston the compression would not be different. BUT, they did not SEE the pistons, and perhaps if they had they would have had a different opinion.

Anyway, I decided to check with Tulsa New Holland, the guys who said "no problem" when I brought back the first piston/sleeve kit because I had measured the sleeves wrong, to see if they had a 4-ring piston and some rings to go with it. I explained to them that I had put the rings on all of the pistons already, so I would be willing to pay for the new ones. The parts guy (Scott)put me on hold for a minute, so I thought he was checking stock. When he got back on the line, he told me he had checked with a mechanic who said (as several of you did) not to mix the pistons. Then he said he would have a new piston for me next week and to bring the 3-ringer in and just swap it out. I pointed out that I had put the rings on it already and he said that's OK, it was not my fault and they would take care of it.

Wow, I was expecting to be out another $25.

Anyway, thanks to those of you who responded and pointed the way.
