Crankshaft seems a little too tight... How can I check?

After I put the main bearings on and torqued them down everything seemed fine with my crankshaft. A friend who fixes buses for the local school system dropped by and I had him turn the crank and he said it was just about right. So yesterday I put in three of the pistons (see previous post and post from last weekend) and now it is considerably tighter. I think it is just the rings, but is there a way to tell if it is too tight? It still turns all the way around, but it takes a lot more effort than before I put the pistons in. I did check each bearing to make sure it was the correct size for my reground shaft. If the rings are too tight, how can I fix them?

Ron, I hope you plastigauged the bearings before final assembly. Recomended clearance is 0.001 to 0.002. If they are too tight you will scuff the bearing and get accelerated wear. Did you check piston fit? Did you check the rings for end gap? If the rings do not have proper end gap when the engine gets hot and the rings expand, they can break. You don't want that. The FO 4 has all the specs for this.

ron, i agree with blitz. when i put mine together last year it did the same when i put rods in. found 3 of the 4 rods out of round and had them resized. after that crank turned with rods and pistons in much better. good luck

Ron, you can expect the crankshaft to turn signifcantly harder when you start adding pistons and rods. Those freshly honed cylinder walls are anything but slippery. You might have difficulty turning this crank by hand with the flywheel installed. Not fair to compare to the in-service engine that sometimes can be turned by the fan (when the belt is snug!). On the other hand, ring end-gap can and should be checked in the cylinder before they're put on the piston... follow that Ford manual....Enjoy yourself, these are fun times!!!!
