PTO Shaft Removal

There is some question as to the correct way to remove shaft. Some say the shaft should be disengaged with hand lever before removal and others say let it in gear. Those of you that have changed the shaft what have you found to be the best end results? I am about to tackle that job. I am aware about 40% of them are problems that are caused by Brush Hogs. But is it easier in gear or disengaged?

I just changed mine last week. It is a 48, that I went from the 1, 1/8" to the 3/8". Busted the end off while using a finish mower, must not have twisted any splines.I had it out of gear and it came out very easy, and in the same. Just raised it up a little and turned some.

I had no problem with mine ( 8n ) 4 11/16 bolts pull it straight out and let it down, when you put it back in just raise it up a bit twist it some and it will slide back into place . If the shaft is bent or twisted thats another story .

I am questioning if the PTO should be in gear not the tractor transmission.

It makes absolutely no difference whether it is in or out of gear when you pull or install it.

I guess ignorance is bliss, because I just pulled mine out and put the other one in. I assume I had it out of gear after the last time I had used it, but do not know. Any way, I either got lucky or it was right, because it worked fine afterwards. Ken/Wa
