Hello- I am going to look at a Ford that is said to be a 9N. I downloade the page of serial numbers and saw the note about the # being on the left side of the engine. Are there any other characteristics to look for? How do you identify a tractor that the engine has been swapped? How much should I pay for an average tractor that runs- starts- has average tires- below average paint- few leaks- 3 point- rear blade- good pto- original electric? Anything to look out for?

FWIW I paid $1200 for my mostly '39 in northeastern NY. It has a reman engine. It runs and operates with no problems. I got a year and a half out of the dry rotted with lots of tread tires before dropping $400 for a new set of rears.

Thanks Arb- I will add that to the list of things to talk about as I look at it in the hopes he will see things my way and knock down the price a wee bit.....Andy..

Andy
Keep in mind that all 9N's and 2N's have a serial number like 9N****** whereas an 8N has one like 8N******, so if an engine from a '50 which would be an 8N was put into a 47 which could be either a 2N or a very early 8N there might be a mismatch in serial numbers, like 8N***** vs 9N*****

Hi Norm- It does help that the model # is the prefix of the tractor. I don't know Fords and that was where the question comes from. I know a lot of tractors use a frame stamped serial #- a trans #- and an engine #. Modern tractors put a great big Model ID on the sides. If the engine # is the only one, why then, till we know better thats what its gonna be. Just hope it isn't out of a different year...Thanks

9Ns have a 3 speed transmission, right brake on right side of transmission, left brake on left side of trans, no running boards from factory (may have been added later).

Look at John Smith's Tractor page. He discusses how to identify N series tractors. Also go to his FAQ. He has a section on what to look for when buying a 8N. It should be mostly relevent to 9Ns as well.

What signs make you think the engine has been swapped?

I was just wondering what a person could look for to back up the engine serial #. If you had an engine from 1950 put into a tractor from 1947,what or how would you tell the number on the chassis? I Have yet to see this one as the owner is out of town for several days. Thanks, Andy
