HI,
Glad to have found you. Ok guys and gals, there I was chugging along on my 9N pulling a hay rake and all the sudden it just quit. Tried to re start, turns over fine but sounds funny won't start. Am not mechanical inclined in the LEAST so please be kind. All I know is it just came back from being converted from a 6volt to a 12volt??? Can't tell you more haven't got a clue. Any suggestions welcome am willing to learn.
Thanks

Depending on the type of alternator used on your 12 volt conversion, some need a resistor put in line to reduce input to coil. Might have a fried coil. Check with whoever did the conversion and ask.

Perhaps we're not listening; although everyone who has responded so far is correct... however what is the part about "it sounds funny"...

It could be something other than the ordinary electrical demons. We need to know more about this sound.

Regards.

Thanks to all who have responded. The part that "sounds funny" is when you depress the ignition button. It sounds more like a low grinding noise as if it were metatl to metal. Normally it is a higher pitch sound and starts right away. This tractor has not even logged an hour since it's conversion. I can tell you that when the gas valve is turn to the off postion the fuel bulb (for lack of proper part term) leeks gas. I realize that is difficult to understand my problem as I lack the mechanical termanoloy to explain effectively my delima. Bare with me guys I'm trying..Thanks so much

Ronda..... ..your just the kinda person, us good ol'boys like to try and help. (grin)

The starter grinder noise is usually an indication of a failed starter bendix drive. Get the newer (and more expensive, naturally) "clutch" type starter drive.

And don't fret about any missing parts (if any) off the current starter drive gear. Ford made the tranny case to have extra space to hold all those starter drive parts that fall off (grin) And don't worry about 12 volts on your old starter drive, it probably was about ready to croke anyways.

You can get replacement parts for almost everything in your fueltank cuttoff valve EXCEPT the stick'em up innna tank big chunks wire screen fuelfilter. (for some reason, they melt) I replaced abuncha fuelvalve parts and finally said "nutts" and bought a new valve. It ain't worth my time. Fuel filter valve is only about $20 and not too hard to change if you are fast and have an almost empty gastank.

I know noises the machine makes can be tough to describe but I think it is going to prove to be worth the effort. Can you tell if the starter is cranking the engine as fast as you were used to it doing?

Have you got a multi meter and a set of booster cables?

If you have a multi meter check the voltage at the coil with the key on while it is cranking and tell us what you read--eliminates most of the primary ignition system as a trouble source.

If you have a set of booster cables do the following with greatest care and exactly as posted since you are going to by pass the neutral safety switch and the tractor may start in gear. Take one booster cable from the hot [positive side] of the battery and touch it to the post on the starter where the solenoid strap is attached. Does the tractor sound like you describe above or does it crank faster and like you remember it doing.

With these two pieces some body here will get the puzzle together.

Your mileage may vary

Rhonda, the first thing I would check: is does it have spark at the plugs? If it doesn't have spark I would replace/check the coil. People convert these 9n/older 8n's to 12 volt thinking they ran on 6 volts. Wrong they ran on 4.5 volts up til about 1950, then they were 6 volt. I can't see your conversion,so your going to have to check or ask your mechanic, What the voltage is going to the coil and distributor. If he says 6 volts plan on replacing the coil points and condensor. John

How long had it ran before it quit? @1 hour could mean a coil is bad. @15 min. could be ignition switch. Might want to talk to the 12v mechanic. How many hours has it been since the conversion? HTH

You need fuel, spark & compression to run. You are missing something. I would go with the spark first considering the conversion. also bypass ignition switch to see if that's bad. Bright blue spark? Then might be fuel problem, then try to run off ether. Update us as you go.
