I'm having trouble with my generator. I'm on my third rebuilt. I know about the cutout and have checked the amp gauge. I know it's the generator that's giving me trouble. So I finally get the third one and before I even bolt it up to the tractor I figured I'd give it a spin on the bench to see if it's putting out. Sure enough I spin it up in the vise by hand and I can read voltage coming out the single lead. A lot better than any other one I've tried recently. But the voltage is reversed! I'm getting positive out the terminal and negative ground. Is this fixable by powering up the unit with the battery like I've read or do I reverse the end plate. Thanks in advance. You guys are the best.

You need to polarize the generator for the proper output polarity. After you install the generator, Attach a jumper lead from one side of the cutout relay to the other side of the relay.(For a couple of seconds) Or if you want to do it on the bench, take 6 volts and connect it to the output terminal and the case. Of course if you have negative ground, you will have to put minus on the output terminal. Now, if you spin it, it should produce a negative output..

Wait ! I think you said that backwards. If I have a positive ground , which I do , I should put positive to the case and negative to the terminal, correct?

Thanks for responding. RF

You're right. If you have positive ground, positive goes to the case and negative to the output terminal. (Easy to get confused, isn't it.)
