I GOT A NEW REPLACEMENT ZENITH CARBURETOR FROM NEW HOLLAND A FEW YEARS BACK. AT TIME OF PURCHASE, THEY TOLD ME TO RUN TOP IDLE SCREW AT 3/4 OUT AND LOWER MAIN BOWL SCREW AT 1-1/2 OUT. I HAVE BEEN REPLACING PLUGS ON AN ANNUAL BASIS FULL OF CARBON FROM A RICH MIXTURE. LAST NIGHT I SCREWED IDLE TO 1/2 OUT AND MAIN TO 1-1/4 OUT. WHERE DOES THE REST OF YOU RUN YOUR JETS? THANKS. PHILIP.

Phillip..... .....Would you believe carb jets are made adjustable on purpose? Would you believe that the "factory settings" are just something to help get your engine running? So you can "optimize" the carb jet adjustments. Would you believe factory carb settings are on the "rich" side? Would you believe a "rich" mixture is eazier to start than a lean mixture? Would you believe that is what a choke is for? to enrich the mixture at start-up time?

To optimize your carb mixture jets adjustment. with a warmed-up engine, adjust your idle mixture for MAXIMUM idle RPM's. Turn down the idle speed screw on the throttle shaft, try to keep the idle speed under 500 rpm when you're finally done.

I'd leave the mainjet at the factory adjustment recommendation. I'd rather replace carbonized sparkplugs from overrichness than do a "valve job" from operating too lean and burn my exhaust valves.

Learn how to "read" your sparkies for carb richness (black soot) and lean your mainjet if too black. But as long as you have enuff power to do the job, leave it. BUT if you really gotta adjust it to make yourself happy, adjust the engine to max RPM's (2500 rpms) and lean out the mainjet so the engine start to stumble, then enrich 1/8 turn and leaveitt..... ..... THANKS FOR THE ADVICE. I AGREE WITH RUNNING ON THE RICH SIDE IS GOOD. I JUST DONT LIKE IT WHEN MY PLUGS CARBON UP AT THE WRONG TIME, LIKE IN THE MIDDLE OF A PARADE. GUESS I SHOULD ALWAYS CARRY SPARES AND TUNE UP MORE OFTEN. PHILIP.

Running rich is OK, but running so rich that you foul out plugs on a parade tractor may indicate that something ain't what it's supposed to be. How are your rings? Burning oil? If you have low annual hours, maybe you should experiment with the mixture a little. There's a pretty wide area between so rich you foul out and so lean you burn valves. I use my N a lot, but get very little carbon buildup and change the plugs every couple of years whether they need it or not. (Actually left the #1 plug in for 3 yrs until I got a helicoil thread problem fixed...it ran fine.)
