I am ready to push the 2N in the Pond and I have the pond to push it into!!!

It ran great last fall when I put it away. Tried to start it this sping at the tree farm and no go. I suspect condensation at the coil or somewhere in there. Left the switch on accidently for about 45 min.

Bought an 850 (sorry N fans) for more Horse Power. 850 runs like a Top thanks to Paul from Pine Island, MN.

I digress: Brought 2N home. Replaced points (burned) coil and condenser. In the mean time; I managed to leave switch on and drain battery ( this is all prior to new points) Can't seem to gap points to reccomended .15 level no matter what I adjust the set screw to. I susspect a bad cam. Can only get .05 at best.

I put it all back together again hoping for the best. This darn thing will not go. Not even a putt.

Options:
1. Sell tractor, non-running, and take a bath, pay for the education.

2. Rebuild distributor with new cam and "counter weights". I am a novice mechanic at best. How hard is this? 55$

3. Buy a "new" distributor and suck up some more education. $170.

4. Playing around with old iron ... Pricless... NOT!!!

5. Push said 2N into said pond and fish off of the structure. Excess oil will keep down the mosquitos.

I love the Old Iron; and love learning about this stuff but the real goal is having a tractor that will perform within reason to help maintain the timber / deer farm, hence the 850 again appologies to N fans).

It is time to divest of the 2N. I need some help here.

The front mount Dist is a pain to work on.

I have a pond, and am ready to use it!!

I have removed said miscreant distributor and followed the FO-4 manual to the T. It does not go into the cam and counter weight thing at all.

Any thoughts on the fried coil and condensor after switch was left on?

How about the poorly manufactured points? Origionl point unusable.

Thanks to all for the input. This has become a point of pride. The old lady is not going to get the better of me no matter how good the fishing might be off of the structure.

I will entertain buyers once the stubborn thing is running.

I found last year that CT here only carried the whole tune-up kits and all I wanted was points.
I searched the archives and found this part number for the points: Niehoff PN FF-17

I took that number to my friendly neighborhood Auto Parts store and they cross referenced to the new "Blue Streak (Standard) PN of FD6769X"

I found these to be superior to the ones in the packaged kits and so far in a year I have not had to adjust them a lick.

Hope This Helps...

You might try measuring the voltage at the top of the coil. It should be battery voltage with points open and about 3+ volts with points closed. If so then you may have gotten lucky and didn't fry the coil or condenser.
I would try to get well made points but if that is not possible I would try to tweak the set you have until it works. Get them to fit flat together when they close.

Think positive; you can do the cam and counter weight replacement.
Do you have the Master Parts Catalog? It has great exploded views of just about the whole tractor and all the part numbers. Real helpful.

Hope this helps.

If you haven't found it.. I'd check this... this is a known weakness with the N front mount distributor...

1. Remove the coil from distributor, the remove distributor from engine front.

2. Turn the cam until the points are 'open'.

3. Check electrical continuity between the contact where the coil spring touches and the case of the distributor.

If you see a short on your meter, and if the points are open (visually)... then you have a short between the point springm hold down screen and the distributor case. Mine did this about 3 weeks ago... Seems the 'insulator' is just paper, and the paper detiorates with age.

If you have this problem, use the spring metal from an old set of points to form a contact pad for the coild spring. If you have this issue as I did, and need a sketch, let me know...

Its easy to fix, and in my case kept my 1947 2N immobile for 2 days.

Andy,
I just did my distributor this past weekend. Because I re-attached one part incorrectly, a 1/2 hour job became a 2 day affair trying to figure it out. I did, and I also removed and installed the distributor so many times, I can now do it faster than a jackrabbit on a date.
Instead of giving up, re-post exactly what you did in what order you did it. Some posts below kidded you that they'll take the tractor off your hands, but that's only because we know the value of them. We want to help. Tell us what you did when, and we'll try to direct what to try next.

I am assuming you really meant .015 gap. I also had a prob setting the gap on a new set of points. After much head scratching, I along with some dude who actually knows something, determined they were manufactured wrong. Took them back to the supply house and the replacement set was just as wrong. Moral of the story: There absolutely are poorly manufactured points out there which simply will not open enough to get to a .015 gap. I only wish I would of took the $5 hit and kept them so I would have a reference point to warn others of. If you left the key on, probably fried the coil. Two bolts removes the distributor, easy to work on off the old girl. I personally have experienced your frustration, but once you get it straight, it all goes away.

Hey Andy - I can identify with what you are saying. I have a 1946 2N and one day hope to find a nice Powermaster to compliment it.

Now, back to the 2N. Certainly a running 2N is worth more than it not running. And also, the distributor is one of those parts that the monkey who owned it before you might have really screwed up.

For those who read the messages here, you know that I recently replaced the radiator on my 2N. The front hood bolts were missing and the hood kept smashing the top of the radiator. I thought I was just fixing the leaking radiator, however, I also fixed another problem. Much like you spoke of, on humid mornings, or the day after mowing, the tractor would not start without popping the coil and applying the wagner heat gut to the distributor for 2 minutes. Well, now that the radiator doesn't leak, the distributor has not needed to be dried a single time - she starts first time every time!

I am not trying to say that you need to fix your radiator, I am just saying that sometimes spending a little money can produce large results.

Pull distributor and rebuild it, good for another 50 years. If not I would be interested in it for my land by Duluth

Sounds like you need a good FO-4 manual more than a pond. When I first purchased my 2N I rebuilt the distributor. I removed it, sat at my workbench, followed my FO-4 manual and nary a problem. Took about 30 minutes.

Andy, Hope the .15 was a typo.. should be .015 and you have to make sure you are on the hi-lobe. Don't think your Cam is Worn... maybe the Bushing but could be a bad set of points..(try the old set and see if you can set them to .015) Good Luck.
