Hi Mark. While your suggestion is spot on for images that will only be viewed here online, it doesn't work as well for those who like to print out the images and put them in a 3-ring binder, for example. I'm one of the culprits on posting images that require horizontal scrolling. I do this because the vast majority of feedback that I get from folks that I help with my scans of old documents tell me that they like to print them out and put them in a notebook. I therefore scan at the source document size, which is typically 8.5 x 11. It doesn't display as conveniently as a pic for an Ebay ad, for example, but is far more useful to the folks who are printing and saving. Sometimes, I have to "up" the resolution on a scan to overcome poor contrast condtions between the paper and the print, like when the paper is very yellowed from sitting in the back room of some dealer's place for years and years. This makes the document display even larger when viewed here. So, I don't think there is a pat answer for this. One needs to use the size and resolution that is appropriate for what is being viewed. For example, a picture of a part that is displayed here or on Ebay, or a pic of Dave#1 testing the prototype 8N airbag, should be sized down to display without scrolling (unless you really want to see a closeup of Dave#1's bald spot with his face buried in that air bag....LOL), and have a lower resolution that is appropriate for screen viewing only. On the other hand, a full page parts list or owner's manual info that the recipients will print out and refer to in their shop is far more useful when scanned at original size and a higher resolution to enable it to be printed in a manner that can be easily read with post-40 year old eyeballs (grin). Unfortunately, when that document is shared via YT, it requires the casual viewer (one who does not intend to capture to their local PC and print) to scroll horizontally if they want to view it.
