Hey fellas: every time I sumit a post here it takes 1 min and 5 sec to sumit it for proof reading then another 1 min and 15 sec.to sumit it to the board. This is just too long in my opinion.I hate to sumit anything it takes so long. This is one of Gateways better models with plenty of memory and ram.I keep my files deleted and history cleared.I have even emptyied the cookies a time or two.Could this be the phone lines here.It always says Im connected at 28800 bps. What does it soun like to you guys...R.M. I usually connect at 26400 halfway around the world in here in Malaysia and have no trouble at all with posts and stuff on this site. But I am probably on this site during off hours when you guys are sleeping or just getting up or going to bed. I can say also that bad phone wire connections can make a heck of a difference as others have said also. My phones used to make a scratchy noises and never could get the computer to do much of anything when it came to posting or browsing the net. Got the connections cleaned up and it's much better now.
One other thing I did is download a program called webRocket from the internet which is supposed to optimize the way your computer sends and receives information from the internet. I was very leary about it at first but saw what it did when I visited my fathers home back in May and went ahead and purchased it myself. It does improve the time it takes to browse around on the net and download pictures from the net. It did, I think cost 30 dollars, might be worth a try?
Good luck

I'm far from a computer genius, but I had the same problem for over a year. Then I gave up on AOL (same Gateway computer) and subscribed to Leapfrog.

Now, the messages take three to four seconds to post which leads me to believe the Cowbox wasn't to blame.

High speed service isn't available here (since the telephone company uses barbed-wire fences for telephone wire - so I'd bet it's your ISP that's the problem.

Regards.

Being retired a minute does't make a differance.
BUT, if you right click your connection box and it shows 28,800bps check your settings.
Or your ISP dial up number is to a 28,800 server.
Last but not least, NEVER tell your telephone company that your computer does not work right on your line. They will tell you they only provide voice quality connections unless you wish to pay more and they will never come to check it. ALWAYS state that there is too much noise on the line to understand someone or it is distracting. That is if you can hear noise on the line.

I agree with some of the comments about there being a delay from your provider.

I suggest you use the "free trial" of "Net Toolbox" from:
Link
Do a "Trace Route" for this forum, first. Then, read some of the helps to find out more information, like, pinging your provider.

Hope this helps, if not, email me and I will try to help you.

This is a great group! I'd like to offer my help, as I get a lot from the group.

I don't do a lot of posting, but never noticed much of a delay. You might have problems with your Internet Provider being overloaded. I think sometimes there are intermediate computers between your IP and the destination also, so who knows where a bottle-neck is going to be.

Bill I think you are right. There are many hops between the boards computers and our computers. It could be any one of them. You could trace the route in DOS and see where the delay is. If you are posting during peak Internet usage times, like when the stock market closes, that can have an effect also. The settings on your computer can make a difference too. If your browser is set to load the complete page every time you visit it you might want to change it.

How do you know that you are getting a 28800 dial up connection? By putting your cursor over the icon in the systems tray? That is just the "agreed upon speed" by your modem and your ISP's modem during the handshake. Chances are you are getting a much slower connection. Go to www.2wire.com and click on the bandwidth test to get a better idea of your real speed.

When I posted this it was running quick enough that I noticed virtually no delay.

That post took about 20 sec. I'm using a 56K modem and usually connect at about 48K.

Takes about a minute to preview post and a minute to submit a post. I have a high speed cable connection averaging 500 kbps download and 100 kbps upload. I think the YT server is overloaded sometimes.

Sounds like you have a dial up connection, and it will take you quit a while to upload or down load at that slow speed. A lot of companies now offer always on internet connections that are at the very least 5 times as fast as what you are talking about. Costs are a little more but I guess you have to decide if money is more important than time. LOL--Keith

Keith Most of the *Land* in this country isn't served by DSL lines or Cable. That leaves only satellite for any high speed connections. And yes.. when you are talking $80 to $90 per Mo. for service + $500 - $600 for equipment & installation it does make a difference.

Leader, you are right, that is way to much to pay. In our *Land* which is mostly all agricultural, we are lucky. Our homegrown telephone company provides us with T.V. cable, telephone, and high speed internet, all three for around $90 a month, with free hookup. Makes me appreciate them that much more after what you said you would have to pay for service. Take care, and God Bless. Keith

Microwave wireless is an alternative to satellite - if there is a local provider. I got lucky - $400 up front for a Cisco 350 Series radio card in my PC, and a small antenna that stares at a grain elevator 8 mi. away, all installed by them. Then $30 a month for a 256k always-on connection. Very happy with it. You might be able to find a local provider at www.bandwidthplace.com. They will also do a speed test.

I no very little about the way a computer works but I've noticed that if a posting doesn't submit in just a few seconds it probably won't at all. I also have noticed that sometimes I can't get an individual post to come up but can get the whole string. Then just a few minutes later it seems "normal" again.

28800? Feel lucky. I'm having a good day if I get 21600. Usually its 19200 or 14400. I guess it's the phone lines - I'm at the end.

I connect at 26,400 With a 56K modem. The Phone guy said it was because I was the VERY LAST phone on the phone line...The neighbors have a phone number from the next town, which is only 3 miles away. Maybe it's time to check in to a new phone number...
