Can anyone tell me where I should start? I have a 1950 8N. The only way I can get it to run is to pull the choke out full and slide the throttle lever up to wide open. Then it will run but still stutters some. I do here a whistle noise (vacuum leak?) that may cease and then start back up while its running. A couple of other factors are: The governor slings a bit of oil so I know the gasket leaks. The carb was redone last year and seems to be working good. Will a leaky or malfunctioning governor cause this problem? Any help would be appreciated. I had this tractor for a few years and it has been running fine before this problem so I'm confident the ignition parts are good. Thanks

Phil, I'd start with the vacuum leak, Just spray carb cleaner around the manifold and carb and listen for the engine RPMs to change...I'm sure you know what to do from there....good luck and keep us posted..... ;>)

Looks like the whistle noise may be a water pump. I'll have to pull it an see. Hope its not some other bearing! I will also have to eat crow. The carb may be the problem after all. I normally leave the gas off when I shut the tractor down. Just to make sure the carb wasn't sucking air I left the gas on and sure enough I saw some gas leaking out of the gasket on the carb, so I took the carb off and polished the upper half with emory cloth and put it back together. Now it runs a lot better but I still think I may have a small leak unless a sticking waterpump pully can cause an engine to run sluggish. I've been out mowing so I'll let it cool down some before I spray the carb cleaner on it. I've caught an engine on fire before doing that. Thanks for the help.

You better be sure about that water pump. My nephew had the pulley and fan fall off and ruined a new radiator. The pulley was just pressed on the shaft.
