Do the 8n and 9n share the same input shaft? I found a 9n tractor with sherman over and under (tractor is running but all sheet metal is rusted off)for $1000.00. Same guy has 8n with front end loader, no sherman and needs head gasket. i am thinking about buying both and parting out the 9n and putting the sherman in the 8n. Any thoughts?

I don't believe they are the same. The 9N has sttraight gears whereas the 8N has helicol gears on the input shaft. Someone will correct me if'n I'm wrong.

Allen..... ..what Rusty sez..... ..early 9N's had straight cut tranny input gear. BUT sometime in 1940 they changed to helical gears and have a "HX" stamped on tranny case flange. This will fit with 8N Sherman tranny input shaft.

Most do a visual 9N tranny input gear inspection, it is a rather obvious difference between straight cut and helical cut gears, not a micrometer kinda thing..... ...Dell

In this case it really doesn't matter. ALL Shermans have a helical (angle cut) gear on the input shaft. If you put one in an early 9N you gotta change the mating gear in the 9N transmission to a helical. Bottom line, it will swap to the 8N, no problem.

Thanks for the info. This will help when I go back to inspect. I think I will go ahead and buy both tractors. $2000.00 for two tractors, Could be a good deal. Keep on posting & Happy tractoring. (:>{)
