Well, after looking at the ol 9n sit in the garage, not running for two seasons, I finally decided I would do the long planned for engine rebuild. I've got the rebuild video, and after watching it a couple times, dove in. Those good ol boys from the midwest are pretty good at explaining each step in great detail. I have, however run in to an obstacle. I made it all the way to engine disassembly to the point where I was ready to lift out the crankshaft. When I attempted to lift it out, I realized that the pulley on the front, was keeping the whole crankshaft from coming up. It is hanging up on the timing gear cover. The timing gear cover won't come off, because it hangs up on the gears inside. So.....I am thinking that there must be some variation in pulleys, or this is not original, since the good ol boys in the video didn't seem to have this same problem. It's only hangin up by maybe 3/16". My thought is that I need to take the pulley off the front, which is held on by a big a** nut that also looks like it used to function as a hand crank socket. Does anyone know what size this nut is? I can't get a pipe wrench on it, so I'll need to go out tomorrow and buy a socket or open end of the right size. I think I'll also have to put some of the main caps back on to keep the crank straight and steady while I "reef" on that nut on front. Am I on the right track? Whack....whack....whack....with the hammer and a chisel....no wrench or pliers needed...spun right off with my fingers.... :)

Thanks for all the advice guys. It's greatly appreciated. As soon as I finish up my first cup of Joe, I'll go tackle it. I'll give the whack the nut a try first. Even if that works, I may just run up to Harbor Freight tools and get the 1-5/16" socket anyway. I already told the wife that I "need" a special tool, and who knows what I might end up coming home with...hehehe.

No wrench is required to remove the pulley retaining/crank nut.

Just find a big steel rod or drift and strike the nut on the side of the tangs with a hammer and the drift. That will make it turn counter clock wise. When it has moved a couple of flats you can remove it with a pair of pliers.

When the nut is removed the pulley can be pulled off by using two large screwdrivers to gently pry the pulley off.

Nothing else has to be removed to lift the crankshaft out except the flywheel and anything else that is connected to the crank itself.

Timing cover or camshaft does not have to come off to remove the crankshaft.

That nut comes off just like a regular nut. Counter Clockwise. I have removed many and if you can get a cresent wrench on it just hit the wrench with a hammer it will loosen with a good solid TAP. Pulling the gear it will slide off but you will have to turn it while pulling it off. Dose not need to come off all the way. Unbolt the Camshaft gear also for more play. If I remember right you have to get the timing gear off first for the crank to lift out because it is in the way for it to pull straite up and out. Mark H.
