Looking for an auxiliary tranny with at least a low range. Hi/low would be fine but really need at least a low range to gear my '51 8n down for mowing. I'm located in West Central Illinois

Thanks

Be sure the sherman will do what you want. When you use low side in the sherman you will slow your ground speed down but it will also slow your pto speed down.

Good Point.

I've got a 5' Woods belly mower and would like to use it for mowing my yard but I've got a lot of trees and obstacles to mow around which requires a slower speed than 1st gear. Will the low side sherman be to slow for mowing grass?

THE STEP DOWN 1ST AND STEP DOWN 2ND ARE BOTH SLOWER GEARS THAN THE STANDARD 1ST, BUT LETS LOOK AT WHAT HAPPENS TO GET 540 PTO SPEED:

GEAR ENGINE RPM PTO RPM SPEED MPH
STEPDOWN1 2200 540 2.77
STEPDOWN2 2200 540 3.56
STANDARD1 1500 540 2.77

I DONT SEE A REAL GAIN HERE WITH THE STEPDOWN GEARS, UNLESS YOU WANT TO RUN A LOWER PTO SPEED. I HAVE THIS INFORMATION ON A REAL NICE CHART. IF YOU WOULD LIKE ME TO FAX IT OVER TO YOU, CONTACT ME DIRECTLY. PHILIP.

Crap!

I was hoping a step down would solve my problem, but it looks like it doesn't. 540 rpm in low 1st is the same speed as 540 rpm in standard 1st.

Thanks for saving me time and money.

The sherman changes the speed of the trans. input shaft and the pto is driven from the rear of the trans. You get the same effect in relation to ground speed and pto speed as slowing down the engine rpm. The only diff is with the sherman in low side you run that ground and pto speed with higher rpm, hence more power. Try mowing with the tractor in low and idling down to the ground speed you want and see how the mower cuts. If it cuts ok and has adequate power just run it that way. If you feel it cuts ok but the tractor has trouble pulling it then maybe the sherman would help. I really feel that to reduce the ground speed very much the mower will be turning to slow to cut well.
I hope all this isn't confusing. It's a simple concept that is hard to explain clearly in print. At least for me.
