Currently I am rebuilding my engine (1941 9N) and unfortunately grabbed the wrong tap to chase two of the spark plug threads in the head. I tried the bushing repair kit available from J.C. Whitney, but I just don't have a good feeling about it. The last thing I want is to have one or both of the plugs launch themselves into the gas tank!! Any suggestions? I was thinking of having the existing (oversize) threads welded over and just cut new threads. Has this happened to anyone else?

I don't know what's in J.C. Whitney, but I do know of a product known as "Helicoil" that work pretty darn well. I agree with Claus and know that the heads are pretty cheap, but if money is a consideration, you may want to use the helicoils. I've been a pilot and aviation maintenence officer for a long time (too long) and have had good results with them. Try'em. I don't believe that they will launch a plug into your gas tank.

But, like Claus says (and I never argue with Claus) new heads aren't that much.

LOL and let us know.

By the time you do all of that, you may be better off getting a new head... They are not that expensive, about $50.00.
Happy Motoring
