I got this 8n, a '50 model. decided to get the engine worked on. My helper and i loaded it in the truck by hand. I finallly tore open my gut, got the inguinal hernia. Its gotta get cut on, being the money grubbing tractor owner I was, I am out of pocket for the medical bill, no health insurance. I got a good idea from you guys what the engine build costs, can I stretch and ask whats a hernia fix worth. I get quote from $3000 to $11,000. I' rather get a bush hog, a blade, an auger etc, Heeelp. Thanks, Prentice, ps hope this isn't too out of line, I haven't found an aluminum block 8n to compare.

If you're not insured you can nagotiate a price with the doctor doing the surgery.

Can't help on the price but can give some advice on the type of surgery to get done. Though I don't know the price differences the laproscopic, spelling don't know but they go in through some very small slits with those scopes and put a little piece of mesh in there for support is much easier on you. I was back to work in one week under no restraints, though I was fairly young when I had it done. With the other type of surgery you can be recovering for as much as 6 months which can restrict your tractor work. Also with the other type of surgery the recurrence rate is very high and it's likely you will have to have it repaired again. My dad had the laproscopic hernia surgery done not too long ago and was back playing golf in 2 weeks with no pain.
I went for years without getting the repair and just finally decided to get it done. It's not that dangerous unless the protrusion is really bad and the blood supply gets pinched off then you can get gange green in your gut which is very dangerous.
Sorry you don't have health insurance and good luck on the price negotations.
Don

Being a Vet the VA saved me over 28,000.00 on my broken foot! I did not and could not afford medical. I now have a major medical plan. If you are a vet check with the VA they can help! Mark H.

Hi Prentice. Sorry to hear about your hernia. I don’t have a bulge yet, but I have a weakness in my left groin area that causes me a lot of pain, especially when I do a lot of heavy lifting or strenuous work. I have been to about 6 different Dr.’s and have gotten conflicting opinions but none of them said I had a hernia. I have diagnosed myself; I have an inguinal weakness that is not yet a full-blown hernia. I have been told that it will eventually pop through.

On the issue of your medical cost, why don’t you do like the insurance companies do, negotiate the price? Let us know how you come out on this issue. Best regards. Rick Ga.

Hernia repair Well its more than $3000.00 unless you go to Mexico. Ball park figure $10,000.00.

Good luck
