I have a 50's 8N that won't go into 1st or 3rd gear. The guy I bought it from said that the end of the gear shift lever needs to be brazed up. He said that it is fairly common for the shift lever to wear down and not engage the gears. Has anyone ever heard of or done this. Seems kinda far fetched to me since I can shift into 2nd, 4th and reverse. Thanks to all!

Here is a picture of what it should look like (and what part he is talking about). This tip is the other end of the shifter handle. Compare it to yours, they can be built back up but it should be done with steel not brazed with brass or it will wear out fast again. You could have other problems with the internal lingage too, like the forks being worn or broke. You will need to drain the transmission to see that far down in it. Mark H.

Mark,

In 3rd, usually, if I hit a big bump, my 8N will pop out of gear. What's the detent mechanism to hold it in gear?

Great Pic! Now I know what's going on under there. It even shows the starter interlock. Thanks Mark.

Notice how the inter/lock works? When in neutral the hole in it lines up so you can push the button down. You can see the hole in it under the button since it is in neutral. Mark H.

Absolutely, once I figured out the top plate orientation ( the filler cap helps!) I tried to imagine the starter buttons whereabouts. Hmmm gee right obove that plate thing with the hole in it! Voila interlock and the hole is where the starter plunger goes in when it is in nuetral as it is in this pic. Momma didn't raise no dummy ;^) StuK
