Well I realize that this is certainly no record, but I was sitting at the kitchen table looking into the back yard at the 8n and I thought that I should go crank her over. Well folks its 17 degrees shes been sitting for two weeks without running. Pulled the choke hit the starter sputter sputter, bump the throttle wiggled the choke hit the button she fires right up jiggled the choke a couple of times to keep her goin and ran like a top. Made me pretty happy. Seems we hear mostly about problems with these old machines and I just wanted to report that there were none. By the way this is with the original six volt system.

It stopped snowing here today so I'll find out tomorrow how our 6 volt 8N starts! I don't expect any problems.

My 46 2N starts right up too. It all is keyed to having it tuned up and the electrical system in top shape.

We have to amend that to "at least six" N owners.

Well, it sounds like there are at least five of us that really understand out N's. We were down to 17 below last week and up here on the high plains our wind velocity frequently matches southern temperatures in the winter. My 6V-'50-8N which sits out in the open 24/7 fired right up. I had to feather the choke for a half a minute and she really objected when I tried to let out the clutch, but after five or six tries the molasses in the rear end loosened up and I was off feeding the horses. It's amazing what an excellent electrical system ol' Henry put in these machines.
BTW Fessman, try cleaning those battery posts and the cable terminals off with a little fine grit sand paper and then wash them off with a baking soda and water solution and see if that starter doesn't turn over a little faster. These machines never cease to astound me. Aren't we lucky?...FWIW

Funny you posted your message. I just started mine (6 volt) at temps in the teens, and sitting in the shade. It started right up. Slow cranking on the starter though. I hope it starts at 20 below.

Same here. My '46 2N starts easy every time. Kinda the same proceedure. It does help that I installed a rebuilt generator, new battery, and I rebuilt the starter. I still don't see why people convert to 12 volts. If everything is up to par, 6 volts works great!
