I have a 9N that died as I was cutting grass and has not started since. It is a 6v system, which was wired negative ground when I bought it and I switched it to postive ground. I have replaced coil, condenser, points, rotor, dist cap, and resistor. There is 6v to coil but when I do a voltage check at concave screw there is very little voltage, less than 1, zero at points. If I pull coil and dist from tractor and connect power wire to coil I have 6v at all contacts, remount dist to tracttor and voltage drops off. Help!!!!!

Ren, You are doing all the right trouble shooting methods but need to understand your measurements.

The Dist is nothing but a simple switch (points) between the Coil pigtail and frame Ground. If the points are open, the circuit "must" also be open. You are measuring the Concave Screw with the points closed.. or you have a "short", to ground, between the concave screw and the points.

Remove the Coil/dist assembly and with the Dist cap removed, primary wire (top) conneced and a "Jumper cable between the Dist body & tractor Frame (ground)". You can now rotate the dist drive thang and open & close the Points. If you connect your meter with one probe on the top primary wire and the other probe on the Pigtail/concave screw... (True Voltage drop across coil)

Points open = ZERO voltage, absolute ZERO

Points Closed = ~ 2.6 Volts (assume Ballast R)

Hope this Helps

ren, The stationary points are grounded and should read zero. The movable points should read zero with the points closed and 6.3 volts with the points open.
