Front axle spacing/clearance

I'm about to put my front axle back on my '49 8N after replacing the pin and bushing. With the original single front spacer, and two rear spacers (big ole washers), there is about 3/16" or so of play front to back. Seems like it should be a much more snug fit that that, but I don't know. The old bushing came out in 4-5 pieces, and the pin was a bit worn also. I'm thinking this looseness didn't help that any. Guidance?

Thanks.

Rob

Rob, Shim the S--- out of it so it won't Budge. those Ford engineers didn't know what they were doing anyway.

Hey Bill, I'm not trying to second guess the Ford engineers, nor questioning your advice in your first response. But I am second guessing whoever may have replaced this setup on my tractor before. It did have the supports for a front end loader on it, and seems likely to me this has been done before on this machine. The front spacer doesn't look quite like my parts book picture, for one thing. I realize I can put things back just like they were, albeit with the new parts, and it will last for years and years that way regardless of whether there is too much clearance, but it would be nice to know that I am doing it the way it was designed.

Rob,I just finished with my front axel rebuild.I had a friend of mine make my shims out of hardened bronze bushing material. The front one is 3/4 inch and the back one is 1/4 inch, this left about 1/8 of an inch play.Larrys8n

anyone know what the clearance *should* be? I'm not trying to be nitpicky, I would just like to have an idea. I think another rear shim is in order also, but would sure like to know what it is supposed to be as designed.

Thanks again.

Rob

You have to much clearance front to rear. I would add another large SHIM waser to the rear side of the front axle so that it doesn't hit the distributor if this is a front mount. Good luck

Rob,
When the front outer axle halves are moved in and out to adjust for front axle width, the inner axle needs to be able to "float" back and forth on the king pin to pick up the slack. Don't make it too tight, or the axle will bind when the outer axles are adjusted for full (76") tread width.

My nickels worth,

Mikey

Mikey, That is only true on the 9N & 2N. The 8N radius rods connect to the center piece of the axle and don't move. The spacers aren't even needed.
