The idle mixture adjustment screw doesn't seem to adjust. You can screw it in and everything is the same. You screw it out and everything is the same. Running rough with the rare backfire out the tail. Got good power but sounds like something off a movie. Chity chity bang bang. May have a little timming problem. Would like to know about the idle screw adjustment.

It sounds like sticky valves to me. I'd put some MMO in the motor oil and run it a bit. Maybe take the valve covers off and squirt some in there too.

Set the idle screw at one turn out like everyone says it should be.

If that doesn't work you'll have to ask here again and someone who knows the next step can help.

I just did a complete carb overhaul about a month ago. Before that, the idle mixture screw had little or no affect. After the rebuild there was a noticeable change. The manual said to run about one turn out from seated. If I turn it in much more than that it starts to run rich. In the last 1/2 turn before seating itself it'll make it run WAY too rich.

If it hasn't run in a year you might have a varnish build up in your carb. The kit is cheap would be worth cleaning it & put a kit in it. Easy job. Might want to look for air leaks around manifold. Good luck

I believe the idle screw controls air and it is common for it to have no effect! Sometimes a carb overhaul with a new kit and cleaning will fix it. Some of the holes are tiny and you need to run a tag wire thru them. The backfiring is another problem likely the timing is retarded or worse, a sticking valve.

Idle mixture is just that for the idle, after you get above a certian RPM the main jet takes over so if you are at a high idle it may not make a differance to the engine. Mark H.

This machine has not been worked in a year. May just have some bad gas. Thanks.

Remove the drain plug from the bottom of the carb and remove all the old gas.
Put in fresh fuel and add "Gum-Out" to the tank, if that is what you beleive it might be.

OK, you guys are right. But that drain plug on the carb was put there for a reason. Even with all the filters some sediment builds up in the bottom of the carb and should be drained periodically.

I fully agree with that, but I would not drain the whole tank through there is all I was saying...

If you suspect 'bad' or adulterated gas, is it really a good idea to drain it all through the carb?

I would use the shutoff, pull the line off before the carb, and then drain into a suitable container.
Not through the carb...That's just asking for more trouble IMHO...

No sence in running dirty gas through the carb.

If that gas is a year old, get it out of there.
A refinery man that should know told me gas is
only good for about 9 months.

Thanks. The old gas has to go. Can't run it through the carb. Can't get the filter out again. The owner before me overthightened the elbow and busted the housing. Got it J, B, welded untill a good used one comes along.
