I think I may have a major problem guys. Last nite I had the box blade and scarifiers on and was doin a little levelin diggin and root rakin, and momma is standin there watchin for a while, and after a while she says,"hey that looks like fun,why don't you teach me how to drive then I can do some of the work to." What do I do now? I have been telling her for three years now that when I am on the tractor I am workin, not playin. This is from a woman who told me that I was not real smart to buy a fifty year old machine and anything that I could do with it we could hire done. I think that I am in for it now. Thanks for any advice you can give me.

couples that spent time with each other stay with each other. but if you dont want her to play the best way is t teach her to drive wait for a windy day and have her move dirt all day in first gear ( Oh how boring ill never do this again)
good luck

OK boys
Here's the female perspective
Let momma drive. Teach momma the basics on operation and maintenance. If its too much trouble she'll leave you alone. But she might like it.
I finally learned how to work on my 48 8N because the "mechanics" in the neighborhood charged me money to fool around with the old gal (the tractor, not me) and say, well, sorry I cant get it started, that'll be $50. So, with an old manual, a friend who is a decent shade tree mechanic, and this board, I can get her going and keep her running. And I am not mechanically inclined.
Point is, Ol Pitch is afraid Momma's gonna figure out he aint as smart as he says. That's ok Pitch. You probably need her help anyway.
(easy, boys, all in good fun)

Accidentally run over mommas favorite flower, then explain how hard it is to watch where your going, clutch brake and shift at the same time. You will have to pay for it for some time to come, but it should solve your problem.

That gives me a baaaad feeling. I could see my wife calling me at work and telling me something like" I decided to use the tractor today & the spark plug thingy yhat holds the back tire on fell off now it's stuck 1/2 in the ditch 1/2 in the road. I TOLD YOU YOU SHOULD HAVE BOUGHT SOMETHING NEWER" then the sick feeling sets in that your baby's broke & in the ditch & certain that whatever is wrong has nothing to do with spark plugs or tires.

Pitch,
Sounds like a good reason to get a second tractor. Another tractor to use, maintain, restore. So what's the problem?

Although my wife isn't interested in driving either of my tractors, I think it is good that yours is. However, make doubly sure that she fully understands how to work with it before letting her. It is so very easy to get hurt with farm equipment. I believe I read where it is the single most dangerous profession there is.

I have two adult sons that I won't let use my tractors because they never have the time to let me show them how to do things safely with them. And it is sad, because there are occasions where I would really like them to be able to help.

buy her, her own 8N....not many woman find interest in what there husbands are interested in.
You could tell her its like a pet...she needs to feed it and take care of it (fixing them is much fun as using them, well almost).

My wife grew up on a dairy farm with ten brothers and sisters .They thought only the boys should operate the tractors and ither heavy equipment, but that all changed after we got married . Until she hurt her back and has several operations and walks with a walker I,would have put her up to operate with anybody from turning ground to cutting grade with a tracked or wheei type mechine. Shes the one awayes to be findind new equipment projests to salvage so they dont go to scrape .

I don't think you realize how good you have it. A tractor driving woman is a good woman!

My wife likes to drive my 2N a little, but she likes taking rides on the hay wagon even more (that sounded dirty, didn't it?).

Teach her to drive it. If not for fun, teach her how just in case.

My dad used to own a farm a few miles from where he lives. He rented out the barn to a farmer who stored his equipment in it. One day, the barn caught fire and wouldn't you know it, the farmer was out of town. But his wife was able to get in the burning barn and drive out the tractor and combine stored inside. Now that is a good woman!

Do as Raytasch says. Paint it pink if she wants. Since I have bought the 9N to go with the 8N Head Honcho and I have taken several rides out back in the evening. Our land is 3/4 of a mile deep and it makes a nice ride. And no, we did not stop for any hankie pankie. But we thought about it.
