I'm sure you guy's can answer this one real quick like. My problem is when I was replacing parts on my 49 8N I forgot which side was up on these anchor brackets for the check chain for the lower lift arms. The brackets attach next to the PTO, but the hole in them where the clevis attaches is off center. The new ones I bought came in nice little bags that were labeled left and right but I imediately took them out of the bags knowing darn well I'd remember which one was the left and which one was the right. Well guess what, I got a case of CRS (can't remember spit) and I don't know if the clevis hole is supposed to be on the high side or the lower side of center on the bracket when it's in place. I not really sure if it matters but I was figurein if they made them different there must be a reason. I gonna try to attach a picture but I've never done that before so it may not show up. The picture shows the bracket with the clevis hole on the lower side of center. Is this correct or do I have it backwards. Thanks.

Thanks everybody for your responses. The majority say the hole should be on the upper side. I'll go with that. I appreciate you haven taken the time to reply.

i have worked on this question for 2 days.. yup i was bored..the holes go up.. all 3 of my tractors were down.. one broke the holes out and i re drilled them the other way years ago UP

The photo shows the the hole in the incorrect position! The BIG problem is that any replacement chains currently are on the market are too long, have links of varying lengths, long and/or short clevisis, in other words I have not found a correct set in years!! Even the 1953 Ford parts book gives a length that is too long! The main purpose of the chains is to keep lift arms from contacting the tires in either the raised or lowered position. Cut the chains so to allow full up and down movement of the lift arms and short enough to keep them off the tires and you are good to go.

With the original clevis and chain size,you should have seven links of chain. don

Yes 7 links is correct if the OAL lengths of both the clevis and the links are 1-3/4" overall each. Many kits come with 8 links and links and clevis length that exceed this making the chain hookup excessively long and dangerous!!

I believe that is backwards. Unless your chains are extra long, you will be lifting against them when the lift arms are at the top with an implement attached. You can see that happen by running the hydraulics without an implement. Length and position was designed to minimize sway in the transport position.
Be sure the PTO cover is in place.
