...Used the 52 8N last week, it started and ran fine. Parked it in the barn. Went to start it yesterday and nothing happened. Turned the key on and hit the starter, not a thing. I didn't have a lot of time to check the connections but the battery connections seemed to be tight.

Any kind of check list I can go through?

Thanks.

-Sal

My guess is the starter switch is not grounding properly. These switches fail regularly. You can test them by placing a screwdriver between the wire terminal at the starter switch and the top to the transmission case under it. The switch is designed heavy duty except for a small phosphor bronze strip inside it which is too frail. The weak link in the chain!

There are a lot of things to check. It is usually best to check the easy things first. Symptom could be caused if transmission is not in nuetral, dead battery, bad battery connection, loose connection at switch or starter selonoid, bad ignition switch, etc. Check these things first, post what you find and let's go from there.

Test light will work fine. Hook one side to battery + (ground). It should light when other side is touched to:
1. The other battery post -
2. battery side of starter solenoid.
3. small post on solenoid (goes out when starter switch is pushed)
4. Both sides of switch with switch on.

If the starter does not turn the engine over, don't worry about the switch yet. It is not needed to get the starter to turn the engine.

to test the ignition switch, you can short out the ignition switch with a jumper.

OK, after you jumper the ignition switch, as suggested by Claus, what did you get? Click? Nothing? Let's start with the assumption that something is wrong, because it will not start. By process of elimination, we will locate the cause of the problem. Sorry, more questions. How did you test the battery to see if it is good? If your battery is good (and charged up), the ignition switch is good, the starter switch is good, the starter is good, the wiring is good, and the transmission is in nuetral the engine should turn over (unless it is locked up or the starter is engaged and locked against the ring gear). So, here is your checklist. Let us know what kind of noise, if any, you hear when your press the starter button.
