I am considering the purchase of an 8N that has gear box water contamination. Additionally, the engine sat idle and had been seized up. Meter shows 4500 hours of use, but the engine seems to run fine. Would you stay away from this tractor?

You ever try and steer one of those puppys when that loader is full ? It aint that easy when its empty my toothpick arms will testify to that . If your Man Mountin Montana , go for it , I like power stearing myself.I sold a 601 Workmaster with 1100 hrs and new paint that is still on the job, that was in 1996 , sold for 3900 bucks, wish I still had it but needed the bucks .

Alaskan-

First, what do you want the tractor for? If for work, Ns are good for a lot of uses, but have some limitations. Buy a tractor that will do what you want it to.

If for the fun of owning one (and they are), then the question becomes one of price, the amount of time & money you have available to fix one, and your patience.

If you want instant gratification, this does not sound like your tractor. A siezed engine siezed for a good reason. That it is running now doesn't tell me much. Forget what the meter says. That's a 50+ year old tractor and I guarantee you that isn't an acurate number.

Tractors have 2 main components that you must know how to evaluate before making a decision. First, engine. Second hydraulic system. Water is common in both just due to condensation, water getting in around the rubber boot on the shifter, FLOODS no one told you about - buncha stuff.

If you get the tractor for $1000, probably a good deal assuming you are in for an overhaul and hyd system rebuild. Beyond that, I can't tell you anything more without more info.

Thanks for the reply. I am lookiing for a working tractor for brush hogging, blading, and light loader work. The tractor has a working Dearborn loader on it. Hyro pump is making noise. Tires are weather checked and worn. Sheet metal is O.K. The guy wants $4250 for it....I know that is way out of line.

And by the way, loaders on Ns aren't fun. N don't have power steering.

If you need a loader, an N's not what you need. Fine tho for brush hog, grading, etc.
