It all started one day when I was bush hogging and a loud noise happened and a huge ball of white smoke came out of the exhaust and it has been doing that since and now some other problems has arose. My 9N ford is very hard to start. So I checked the plugs and noticed they were somewhat fouled so I replaced them. I used the tractor for about an hour and it started to back fire. The next day I tried to start it and it wouldn't start so I checked the plugs again and the number two plug was very wet with oil and gas. I cleaned it and same thing as before it ran ok for a while and starting backfiring so I parked it. Does any one have any suggestions? I think I might have a ring and value problem. Is it hard to rebuild the engine and to do a val job? If you think this needed will I need any special tools? PLease give me some input.

Paul, I have to agree with Mark. When it comes to a rebuild and you don't have any mechanical expeirence you can do more damage than good. It could be something as simple as a blowed head gasket, but if you don't know what your doing it's real easy to break that head. But if you hire a mechanic, he should stand behind his work. I won't give any price quotes because it depends on what you have done and where you get your parts. First thing I would do is have someone trouble shoot it. Good Luck John

I read your post with a big question. What could I tell you that would help? It made a loud noise then blew a large ball of white smoke out yet you kept driving it? Over and over problems got worst but you continued to try to use it? This scares me some what. I would hire me a mechcanic to take a look at it first. Yes if you do not know what to do, a rebuild is not something you just jump into. Remember you take it apart it cost more to fix if you haft to have someone else take over. You should start with learning about tune ups and such first and basic engine running principals befor you attack a rebuild. Engine rebuild 101 over the internet is real hard to do with out a back ground for doing the work. Get some help first from some one who can look at your tractor then proceed. Trying not to be negitve either. Good luck, Mark H.
