2N with no spark

I have a 47 2N with a Front-mount dist

I changed points, condensor, and plugs Now I have no spark at the plugs and the distributor is not putting out any spark at plugs or coil

The coil is not the problem as I used it on my other tractor and it started fine.

Any tips on what is wrong, or where I can begin to troubleshoot from will be greatly appreciated.

Tom, New parts can be faulty. File your old Points and install "use a points file (double sided) and using fingers close the points on the file such that material removed has a matching angle"

The Points Plate retaining Clip has a loop that lines up where the Coil Pigtail enters the Dist. If the loop is incorrectly installed/Slipped the pigtail will touch the Clip and ground Out.

Hope This Helps,

Tom,

Here is the text of a post by Zane from way back. It describes a process of trouble shooting problems with front mounted distributors.

"Here is a way to check out a front mount coil and points etc. Not systematic or scientific but as the best mechanic I ever knew said, "The ignorant way" His name was Buch Nelson by the way and he worked all his adult life as a mechanic for the Talladega County Road Department. Retired and died a year later from cancer. (Too many days in the smoke and chemicals)If you have a can of starting fluid spray some into the air cleaner. If it starts you have problems with the fuel system. Probably some foreign matter in the bottom of the carb such as dirt or water. If it won't fire with starting fluid it is in the ignition and could be the points condenser etc. Remove wire to the coil from the resistor and check to see if you get a spark from the wire when you strike it to the frame of the tractor. If you do then remove the distributor cap and coil and take the distributor off the tractor by removing the two retaining bolts. When you put it back on be sure the offset on the shaft is in line with the offset on the cam gear. With the distributor off the tractor reconnect the coil wire and put the coil back on top of the distributor with the cap and wires off. Connect the base of the distributor to the tractor frame with one jumper cable. Using a cloths pin connect a wire from the base of the dist. to about 1/8" from the terminal that connects the distributor cap to the distributor. Turn the dist shaft and there should be a blue spark between the gap of the small jumper wire between the terminal and the base. If no spark you should turn the distributor till the points are open and then using an insulated handle screwdriver make contact between the two open point contacts. If it now fires you have a bad set of points and they are not making contact when they come together. They should be replaced. If you have no spark anywhere then you should try grounding the incoming spring connector from the coil at the bottom of the coil to the base of the distributor with the points removed from the distributor and also the condenser. If there is still not any spark from the coil you should replace the coil."

Good luck,
Danny

Tom,

If you're SURE the coil is good, check the connection between the coily spring on the bottom of the coil and the distributor. This often is the problem. It's a poor way to do the connection, but it's what you have to work with. You might have to stretch the spring SLIGHTLY to make the connection. I've had this problem before, and it can be FRUSTRATING!

Good Luck!

Ron

Today, armed with the advice of several N'ers, I attacked my "no spark" problem. It was in fact a faulty inigtion switch. I connected the coil wire directly to the battery and I had spark at all plugs....weak spark, but nonetheless.. spark. Thank ya'll for the help.

ps..don't go anywhere...i'll prolly need some advice again.

Tom, pull off the distributer again (only 2 bolts) and double check the point seting and look very close to make sure the condenser is not shorted to the dist.
Try this and see if you can get spark.

The lead coming fron the capicator should be conected to the points and not touch the dist it's self. The case is grounded to the dist, not the pigtail.

Its not shorted and is connected as you describe.
