I am wondering if the door in the choke plate of the marvel schlebler carb is suposed to be spring loaded. Mine has no spring to hold the door closed. Is this the way it's suposed to be?
Thanks in advance, Allen (;^)

My NAA now has a spring loaded flapper on the choke, because I put them on during rebuild. But when I tore it down for rebuild last winter, the old spring and the flapper were gone. Made me wonder where those parts went. (Such as: sucked into the engine?) My rebuild kit came with a spring and flapper, I put 'em on, and it made cold starts a whole lot easier. I have heard that it's common for older M-S carbs to have these flapper parts come off, and get sucked into.... ahh, I try not to think about that part.

All the Marvel Carbs I have seen have been spring loaded so they pull the choke knob back when you let go of it. Mark H.

Thanks Willy N, I know the choke has a return spring but my question has to do with the tiny little door in the choke butterfly. When the carb is installed this door in the upper half of the butterfly sits almost horizontaly to the main butterfly when the choke is closed. I don't know if it is supposed to be this way or if it is supposed to hsve a spring that closes the door and then opens partialy when the choke is closed and engine is cranking. It could be designed to close under backfire conditions in which case it would not need a spring. I think this may be the case as I don't see anything for a spring to attach to. I think I will check the carb on another tractor in the morning. Have you had one apart before? The pic in the manual dosent show the back side of the Butterfly. Thanks, Allen (;^)

I see what you mean. I have had them apart and have 10+ photos of them but none showing the choke butterfly. My parts manual shows the opening but not the door on it. It also shows only the outside return spring. It has something on the other side but can not tell what it looks like. In my Ferguson book they call it a "Poppet Valve" on the choke plate and it dose talk about the choke being closed and the Poppet valve admiting air only thru the spring loaded Poppet valve and perviding a easily ignited rich mixture. SO it must have a spring on the back side to do this. The Ferguson carb is the same as the 8N, 2N & 9N in design and make. Mark H.

Thanks Mark: I just read a post from Dell confirming a spring on it. I'll be ordering a full carb kit tomorrow. I might as well do it right! Allen (;^)

Allen..... ..there is suppost to be a spring on the backside of your choke flapper valve. It is suppost to open a little bit to supply some air when you pull the main choke completely closed. The spring is very tiny and lightweight. And they usually are included in a "full" carb rebuilt kit..... ..... Dell

Thanks Dell, You da man. I was debating whether to buy a complete kit or not, You just made up my mind for me. I got the carb all shiny inside and out. I suppose it would be a shame not to go the full route and do it right. Happy tractoring
