I have a 57' 640 that I use around the farm. The last time I used it, I was bushogging HEAVY grass (love grass) and it began to struggle to keep moving. The PTO would nearly stop and the tractor would jerk and nearly die. Today I was bushogging and after an hour or so the engine began to sputter and struggle the same as it did the first time. I wasn't in heavy grass or any other extreme condition. My oil pressure is around 40-60 during the regular running times, but when it begins to sputter and struggle it drops to around 20. I thought it might be the governor, but it seems to be ok. Its not like its getting hot either. I'm confused!! I realize my post should be in the Ford "other" section, but ya'll guys have helped me before with my 2N and I trust ya'lls advice. Thanks

Tommy

Did you check the oil level?

It's not always the tractor. Did you disconect the brush hog to be sure it was not binding? Dave OH

You might consider looking at the simplest thing first. A load on the engine increases the need for fuel. Maybe your fuel system is marginal. Checking fuel flow and cleaning the filters is well described in the archives.

I’m lazy and like to explore the least work solutions first. Occasionally I get lucky.

What they said and also make sure timing is on the money. If it is off, on either side, you will lose power under load.

...a good tune-up is in order. Did you check the plugs for fouling? Did you check the points? Replace the condensor?
How often do you use this tractor?
Have you checked the fuel supply-filters, fresh gas, carb adjustment?

The oil pressure is dropping because the rpm's are dropping.

If it were an 8N I would look at the coil, ign switch, points/condenser. Possibly a wire grounding out somewhere. But the drop in oil pressure (unless accompanied by lower engine RPMs) is a mystery.

Is the oil pump in the 640 run by the distributor shaft like most late model V8's? If so, I'd look at the distributor for the solution.

Hope this helps,
