Maybe some one can tell me the trick of putting in a new starter. I have been trying for three days now, it's like put a square peg in a round hole!!!! Is there a trick? Alyn

1. When I replaced mine, I fought with the grinding thing for about 2 nights and finally gave up. Split the tracor in an about 2 hours and then it slips right in. Also gave me the opportunity to do numerous other jobs I had been putting off.

2. I also fought with the grinder wheel to spin the bendix back and never did get it to work. Found it easier with an impact wrench. Take the bendix off of the shaft and then you can slip a 19mm/12 point socket over the gear. Secure the other end and then hit the trigger and the drive spins back into place as slick as can be.

Are you trying to tell me retracting the Drive didn't help? I am destined to spilt the tractor, I have been trying to avoid that. I appreciate your input, you've answered a few questions, but are there two different types of drives? Thanks,Alyn

It seems on the board here that most have had success with the grinding - but I couldn't. There are at least two drives that I know of - the original and the newer aftermarket one. The new style is considerably heavier and should stand up better. But as you know, the downside is that it is bigger and harder to get in.

Don, How do you know if it's a positive drive? And what do you mean by turning it out? Thanks, Alyn

I just put mine back in not too long ago and what I did was to unbolt the oil filter cannister and got it out of the way. I know it can be done without doing that but I didn't have the patience.
Keep trying, you'll get it.

Thanks for your response, but the problem isn't the oil cannister, it's getting pass the flywheel. Are there two different drives?

Alyn..... .....to successfully install a N-Starter yas juss gotters hole yer tunggue lakk thaass (grin)

Try rocking your engine a tad by pushing on a big rear tire. Don't take much rockin. Then install like you were pointing the starter bendix shaft at about 2 o'Clock and get the front of the starter cocked against the engine block. That and holding your tongue just right usually works.

BUT some N-Owners outta frustration will grind a "notch" in the starter hole at about 1-2 o'clock about 1/4" deep and 1-1/2" long. Kinda like an outhouse crescent moon. This notch doesn't weaken anything and it is "hidden" by the starter motor so no one knows it is there.

I don't really endorse this method on a built together tractor cuz its creates grinding dust and metalic shavings but if you've got the tractor split and can clean it all up, do it..... ....Dell

Thanks, I'll try holding my tongue just right!LOL
then I'll try rocking it.... Do you know if there are two different drives, the starter I am trying to install is new with a new drive. The older starter had a different type of drive. Alyn

Alyn..... ...what Don B said.....

The newer posi-drive is much better. make certain your drive is "retracted". That means all the way to the far end of the starter drive shaft, away from the starter motor..... ..Dell

Dell, How do you retract the drive? The drive I have is not away from the starter motor. Do you know how to retract it? Thanks Alyn
