Hi All. I thought that title would get your attention. I asked this question on the Ford board and didn’t get much response other than the Ford 2310 as about like an 8N. I have a 49 8N that I have had for 26+ years and I love it. However, I have been looking for another newer Ford tractor to use around my small farm. I don’t really need another tractor and I don’t want to spend $12,000 for a new one. I basically just want one with PS and live PTO around 35 HP. Over the last year I have looked at several early 70’s model Fords, 2000, 3000, 2600, etc… but have not found one to suit me for the price they were asking (Hi). This weekend I looked at a 1983 Ford 2310, three-cylinder diesel with PS and live PTO. It is in fair condition with about 1200 hrs. on the proof meter. It needs some minor repairs and the front fiberglass cone is cracked in a couple of places. A John Deer dealer has it and they want $6350 for the tractor, as is. I cannot find out much information on this model tractor other than it was only in production a few years, from 81 to about 84.

I would like to know what, if anything, you intelligent Ford tractor enthusiasts know or think of this model tractor. It is like the Ford 2810 with out the wet brakes. The price is a little more than my target price ($4000 - $5000) but I am considering purchasing this tractor. It needs some work but it has good potential and it is similar to what I have been looking for. Thanks. Rick Ga.

Rick, I don't know where you are located in GA., but there is a place that reconditions tractors off of I-75 approx. 2 hours south of Atlanta. I'm at work today, but I have their business card at home if you are interested. E-mail me for the info. I stopped by there in Dec.2001 to look for some 8n parts and the guy was completely rebuilding a 1974 Ford diesel tractor, I believe it was a 3000. It looked almost new, new paint and all parts checked over and re-built if needed. He was asking $6000.00 for it. He may have something to fit your budget or needs.

Hi Rick,

I used a ford 2310 for about three years. A friend owns the tractor and uses it in his personal hay business. I've used it to rake and move 5 foot round bales weighing up to 1200 pounds. The lift had no trouble lifting that weight. It also pulls a 6 foot brushhog real well.

This tractor has power steering, a differential lock which is a small lever at the back of the I think right hand running board that you step on with the heel of your foot if one wheel starts spinning, and a foot throttle which is really really handy.

This tractor had about 900 hours when he bought it in about 1996. I think he paid $7500 or $7800 for it and it was in near perfect condition. No implements came with it.

It's very similar in size to the 8n and doesn't seem too much bigger. If your looking for someone who doesn't have one bad thing to say about the 2310 then I am it. The price doesn't seem too unreasonable to me. Your post on the ford board said 2000 hours and hear you said 1200. I don't think a diesel engine starts getting tired untill about 3000 to 4000 hours so you should be good there.

I have a ford 2000 diesel about a 1973 year with over 3000 hours and it's still going strong, although it doesn't burn as clean as it used to. The hour meter also stuck for a year just after 3000 hours and then started up again so I don't know what it has now.

The 2310 will seem to run forever on a tank of fuel. You will have none of that one gallon an hour when working like the 8n. If the tractor hasn't been abused, I think you will be pleased. Just my oppinion.

Darrel.

Hi Darrel. Thanks for the feedback and the comments on the 2310. Let me explain the discrepancy on the hours. Before I went to look at it the dealer said it had a little over 2000 hours. When I went and actually looked at it the proof meter read just under 1200 hours (11??). They had several used tractors and I figure the dealer was confused.

It is in fare shape. The worse problem is that the safety interlock that prevents it from cranking in gear has been bypassed with an auxiliary pushbutton starter switch. The right brake doesn’t work. The tires are OK but have a lot of chunks knocked out of the tread. And, the front fiberglass cone is cracked (small holes busted in it). I would not say it is in excellent shape, maybe somewhere between fair and good.

As far as the price goes, I am thinking about offering them $6000. If they don’t want to sell it for that I will just keep looking. Like I said, I’ve got my 8N. Thanks again.

The 2310 has the live PTO via 2-stage clutch. 8 forward and 2 reverse speeds. I think it's a pretty good tractor in that HP range and frame size. They're supposed to deliver pretty good fuel efficiency.
