I purchase a 8N this last March the guy said it was a 1951 or 1952 he also said it was in perfect condition. Thats another story. The Smith web cite was helpfull, From what I research I believe its a 1950 or 1951. The block ID is not readable is there any other area that have serial number that can identify the year. Items that may help, Proofmeter, forged knob on shifter handle, side mount distbuter, 8N-B left rear of block, headlight mount is a round mount, 8N tin can housing starter solenoid, air filter oil cup is flat bottom. If any of these help please let me know, or if you can let me know what else may identify it. Thanks Arlon

Thanks MikeC This is what I found left side just # 035, right HN4012A2 underneath 2-13-42, left side rear housing 8N-SH4024 unerneath B18, right side 2SHD30 unerneath BN70060, other #'s 8n-3130, N543, engine 8NB-2 above it on smal plate ND241. Carb has Marvel schbler on it. I got a feeling I've been had, its probly a combo 2N,9N,8N. Not only that the more I tried getting the serial number off the block looks like it has been ground off. Hope these will help. Thanks

You can look on some of the castings such as the axle trumpets and post the date code that you find there. But to really narrow it down you will need the serial number from the engine (assuming that the engine has never been swapped).
