10 years ago a cylinder liner cracked in my 8N and slid down the cylinder to the point where it was hitting the crank. I had that repaired with a new liner. The tractor has not been used hard at all if that makes a difference. Now, it has happened again. Here's the question, since this is the second time around, is this a common occurance? What can be done to prevent this from happening again?

Any help would be appreciated.

Phil

I have a 52 8N that did the same thing at the beginning of last winter. I stuck a new liner in it' and I'm know starting to hear that same tapping noise it made just before the liner dropped. Looks like the engine will be on the 55 gal drum soon.

Phill..... ....the N-Engine is a dry-sleeve design. And while the sleeve installation should be "interferance fit", meaning the sleeve should be just a tad larger diameter than the cylinder hole. Install by "freezing" the sleeve (metal expands when heated and contracts when cooled).

For somereason, your block cylinder is bigger than the sleeve OD. Could be the block was incorrectly re-bored to mount the slightly larger OD castiron sleeve? Just a guess. The earlier sleeve was thinner sheetmetal with slightly thinner OD. Castiron sleeve seals piston rings just a tad better for better compression and slightly higher power. Both sleeves use the same diameter piston.

They now make a sleeve "pucky" to glue sleeve in place. I'd use that when you re-install the sleeve..... .....Dell

As Dell said it sounds like that bore is oversize. You didn't say if you had the iron or steel sleeves. If they are the steel 0.040 sleeves you can have the bore remachined to take the iron 0.090 sleeves. There should be a ridge on the top of the sleeve to hold it in place and stop it from going down. If that ridge is going down with the sleeve the bore has to be way oversize. Can you post a photo? That would be interesting to see. If you have a photo and can not post it email it to me and Ill post it.
