I just bought an old 1950 something ford tractor.
(my first) It turns over slowly to start?
I used to have a 1950 ford pickup truck that did not start good until it was equipt with a 9 volt system. I wondered if this is good for a tractor??

Or what will make an old tractor start good in the winter?

Thanks to all for your answers!! :)

I put a new battery in and now this starts as fast as I hit the switch :)))

I have a lot to learn! but get some by just running & digging around the property.

Again, My greatful thanks to all of you :)

If it's "real slow" make sure your batt. has 6+ volts. If it does maybe you have dirty connections, bad cables, or a bad starter. For winter use a lighter oil.
I don't know what you really mean by slow, that is a subjective term, what you may think is slow I may think is perfect for an 8N.

Richard, I bought a 52 8N some months back it has an 8 volt battery. Tractor starts great, however, I had to replace the regulator a few weeks ago and you have to set the 6 volt regulator to put out about 9 volts. Mine is putting out about 8.7 but it keeps the battery charged. Jimbo TX

Richard..... ....don't do it.....no body makes a 9 volt wetcell battery nor a 9 volt generator. And 8 volt wetcell is a crutch. Remember, to todays ears are used to the quick start whump of 12 volts, the ol'N's start sooooo oo slooooo wwwww, but they will start. Get your engine turning and then pull your choke for a quickie, should start.

Your early 50's Ford tractor was a 6 volt POSTIVE GROUND system.

Remember the 6 volt mantra: "keep'em clean, bright, and tight" and don't be fer usin' enny of them thar wimpy ferrin' made battery cables. Get some 'airy chested 'merican made double ought (00) thick as yer thumb battery cables.

A good tune-up will make any engine start eazier, even in the winter..... ....Dell
