I had a question on the Ford board but I like this site too for the reason I have a new 1940 9N I bought and its stored inside most of the time.

I paid 5200.00 for it and it has a rear scoop from Farm and Fleet. It burns oil but it looks really nice.

My question is why are fatter tires better than skinny tires and does it make much diiference if I have a 12" or a 14.9 inch rear tires.

Richard

Richard,
I know how you feel about your tractor. I was excited with my first, and even more excited when I got my second a few weeks ago.
Get yourself a tractor t-shirt. When I wear one, I can't tell you how many people just start talking to me about what they have/had. Tractor people are good people.

Sorry about the Canada crack. You are happy with your 9N, and that's what really matters. I know the feeling. When ever I know people are coming over, I 'accidently' leave my NAA outside, for them to see. Good luck with her, and come here for good advice. And some good-natured ribbing. Larry NAA

i didnt take it sereusly. i cant wait to piant it up to look like the rear scoop and maybe i will be able to figure it out and send a picture if i can get a camera somehow. i will get the walmart paint to match the rear scoop and red paint for the ford names on it. i used some black paint i had in a can and brushed it on the hood and fenders to hid the rust and it looks better already but i think the spray paint is better than using a brush. i put a lot on it so the paint brush wouldn show brush marks but it was hard not to get drips from too much paint. i will spray paint over the drip and brush marks just to smooth it out better. I wrotye my name on the front of the hood and my girlfriends name on the back of the tractor by the pto. she laughed at it. it is now Richards and Cathys tractor with a new looking orange scoop. I will try to put it in a picutre for everyone to look at because it is now nice looking and good for me.

As with any old tractor, I'm glad to see it working even if it smokes. Good luck getting things cleaned up around the place, that's what I spent the summer doing with my new loader tractor. I'm trying to figure out if my wife thinks it looks cool or is just glad it takes up so much time I can't go see any old girlfriend. Richard, there's no way you paid too much if one machine can make you that happy!

Thanks for asking your tire question. I have wondered "wide or narrow" for a long while now.
As usual, I learned from this forum....because YOU
asked a simple question. Thanks Richard!

...You live in Canada. Because 5200 in loonies is about 3500 US, a good price for a 9N.

Oh, Canada

I got a good deal on my 9N!!!!! I paid 5200 for it with a Farm and Fleet rear scoop and sme other items and I was happy. it is a nice tractor and I live in Machias! I would not have found it if I lived somewhere else it has new tires on it and it smokes a little bit and when I start it the puff of smoke looks real good like and old time tractor should be. I am going to put a loader bucket on it and finally clean up my yard with the bucket and scoop I was looking for a long itme for one of these and I found it!!! I am so very happy about this and my girlfriend thinks it is really neat.

39 years ago my girlfriend liked fishing, water skiing, swimming, riding around in the convertible with the top down, etc. so I married her. Shortly after the wedding she decided she didn't like any of those activities anymore and so we got rid of the boat, convertible and fishing gear. Don't let that happen to you.

I live in Machias Maine. Yes this 9n is the best thing Ive got now and it is worth more than anyhting to me. I bought 1.2 acres 6 years ago along the major road and everyone sees my place when they drive by it and now i can clean it up and wave to everybody on my 9N! Sometimes when a car is coming and i hear it I run to the 9N and start it up and pretend I am working it and give it some gas to send the smoke up in the air to show everyone I have this tractor. I scraped and repainted the scoop with two cans of orange spray paint I got at walmart too. my girlfriend bought them for me and i went right outside and sprayed it up. I keep it on the tractor all of the time. I work a mini mart check out for the past 6 years and I have a picture of me sitting on it by the cash register and people ask me if thats my tractor. I tell them yes it is and I really am proud of it.

Not only compaction but surface area. More surface area=more ground contact=more traction. Much research has gone into wheel slip for given tire sizes and traction bar design. Then you have the radial vs. bias-ply question.

Richard..... .....can you imadgine what compation will do to plant roots? Do you know what compaction will do to soil drainage? Tractor traction is gained by weight. Usually, water in rear tires. Traction is required to pull a plow or other tillage implements.

Consider this, the original 9N rear tire was 8-32, they changed to 10-28 which is now new measurement equivalent 11.2-28. They all had the same outside diameter so the gearing stayed the same. If you get too big a tire, it screws up the gearing/horsepower curves. Big tires can look cool, but if you don't have the horsepower (9N's is 23 hp) you can't pull it.

I have 14.9-24's on my 8N. The outside diameter is the same as 10-28's..... ...Dell

The next time you have a mud hole around the house, lay down a 1 by 12 two feet long and step on it "wide traction". Then put down a 1 by 4 two feet long and step on it "narrow traction". See which one gets your feetzies wet the fastest.
