I know the low down on what color a 9N, 2N and 8N should be painted. However after the snow ends in the spring I want to redo my 9N. I am a profesional painter (auto's not houses) and I am thinking about giving my 9N a custom paint job. i have not decided on what paint pateren or colors to go with. Does anyone have any sugestions. I thought about flames or even 3D color, such as a prism color that changes colors as you look at it. I live in a small town and when someone changes the type of food that they feed there cat everyone knows. I was just thinking it would be fun to get them all talking.

Sam I like your thoughts. I really like the black seat on the original color of the 8N so I think if I had the bucks and time I would be into black sheet metal and a light color (pearl white?) for engine etc and royal blue pinstriping and wherever it says FORD. Chrome pipes and shifter.
Have fun

Good idea, Sam. I'm painting my '49 8N in original colors, but since I'm a hard-core traditional-style hot rodder, I like your way of thinking. How about bright red castings and wheels, all black sheet metal, and a wild flame job over the hood that fades from light yellow at the front to red in back. Then outline the flames with a blue pinstripe and clear coat the whole thing. Chrome a few parts (headlights, etc.), run a straight pipe (no muffler), and that thing will look like a deuce highboy from a distance!

I totally agree with Dell. Given that it comes from the hotrod era, when many were taking the old Fords and Chevy's and hotrodding them, I'd go with the flames. If that don't get em talking, nothing will.....LOL. I'm also into Corvettes, and there are two distinct bodies of owners, the customizers and the NCRS purists....and they take it much futher than the N tractor restorers in terms of their respective passions. I'm more inclined to customize (at least I have with my current Vette), and if I was going to do what you are with my 8N, I'd definitely go with Dell's choice, plus chrome exhaust and other parts. Man, I wonder if we could find some ole Cragar mags in 28" diameter??? That would be the hottest tractor in the July 4th parade.

Happy Holidays..... ..... ..... .Ed

Personally, I'd always thought Candy Apple Red with yellow flames along the hood might be photogenic and for making conversation.

To me, color is only of importance when you go to match and since the N-Tractor is so small, why bother matching color, just spray it all over again and it will all match.

I like some of the hardness and longlifeness of some of the "exotic" 2 part paints like "Imron?"
but somehow am little skeptical of the "shiny-ness", perhaps needs some of that special lowgloss additive stuff the army uses in their camouflage paint..... .Dell

Maybe stay with yhe right shade of gray with a lot of pearl, or a light gold fleck. Whatever, it's yours. JUST DON'T PAINT IT GREEN AND YELLOW!! That only looks good on deer.

I've thought about that myself. Maybe pearl white on the tin and a deep burgundy on the cast...After grinding off the big boogers and then priming and sanding until the castings are smooth...some custom gold pinstripeing to accent the paint...And the alternator gold plated just to p#@s off the 6 volt crowd! ;)

There are a lot of purists out there, but I am going my own way also. It is, after all, my tractor! I am planning on painting my chassis in the NAPA Ford "light" grey, while the hood, grille, fenders and wheels will be in a considerably darker (read original) 9N grey. Since I removed just about every bolt on this thing and sandblasted it, I painted the gen., starter, air breather, fan shroud, tool box, etc. black. It may not look "correct", but I painted a model in these colors and I think it looks great!

Whenever I go to a tractor show I walk up and down the rows and see the proper paint jobs. Mine will be the one at the end with a little character, and probably several guys standing around it wondering what I was thing in the first place!

You asked!

Greg
