That's the message. I've got great conventional cameras, but take primarily slides. Would like to get into digital. How far too go? How much to spend? Will be sending via my iMac and iBook. Mike-

I use a kodac DC215 ZOOM MICRO that my son found on the internet somewhere for about $225.00 and I really like it. At the poorest settings you can take about 60 frames. I usually take a lot of frames and then edit out the bad ones. gives you lots of choices of pictures to print or file and send over the net.

You will need a battery charger and a cable to run it into the computer. The pictures can be printed at most big photo shops by taking the card out and taking it in to them for printing. I just use my color jet.

Picture I made of my 600 when I was fixing the five speed transmission. This is the way to do a clutch the easy way.

Has lots of nice features. Here's a couple of pics I took with the camera:

I know...it aint a Ford but you get the idea on the quality of images. The first pic is using the "Macro Focus" feature.

Click on the link below to read more on the camera.

Those are nice digital photographs...perfect for this use. Those Nikon Coolpix really seem to have a lot going for them. I've been researching all day and also like the Olympus...Fuji (quite similar) with USB cords. My daughter tells me she will likely be getting a new computer. Thanks so much for this input and this example. Mike-Iowa

Mike, I've had an Olympus D-340L for two years now. Many here on this forum have seen the output since. I've been extremely pleased with it, though by now I guess it's getting obsolete. It's been extremely reliable and done a great job. It inputs flawlessly into a variety of graphics processing software from basic stuff like EZ Pics to more advanced software like Photoshop v5 & 6. I just bought my younger son a newer version of the same camera with a 3x zoom lens for Xmas. I'd buy another Olympus in a heartbeat, but would definitely get the USB interface. It wasn't available with this one, so when I'm uploading a bunch of photos via the serial interface, I go make a sandwich or something until it's done (grin).

Happy Holidays..... ..... ..... .Ed

Wow!Just the kind of help I need. Most popular here? Sony Mavica at $1000ish (I think they've come down in price recently) because of floppy disc convenience with older computers. Would be great for my daughter's older computer for granddaugher pics (very important). Medium priced USB suggested for my iMac to show off my tractor successes and failures. (I want USB, but prices dropping monthly) El cheapo (less than 100) recommended for rough and dirty use but not highest quality. (Might be like a China-made wrench, always some use! Bad news! Wife wants top of the line. And I want new 12.4x28 Firestones! Mike

Be assured that I didn't pay $1000 for my Mavica FD-73 - more like $475 one year ago. Check which model you're looking at. I think Sony has several Mavica models now, and the high-end version will record 60 sec. of mpeg video w/sound on a 3.5" floppy. You pay mucho extra for that.

Hi, I have a Agfa ephoto780c. I bought it on ebay for $130 with shipping. it uses the smartmedia cards. It has the 2.1 inch lcd screen, so you can delete and reshoot your pics if they are not what you want right away. We are happy with it. it is low-end. only 300,000 pixel resolution, but has been good for what we use it for. My wife shoots snaps of the kids all the time and stores them on pc. She thinks its the best thing since sliced bread. If you want something just for snapshots and listing stuff etc. something in this price range will do nicely. If you want pro-quality, you will end up paying many hundreds of $ for a 3 megapixel camera. I would not recommend the kind that use a floppy disc for storage. I would recommend either smartmedia or compact flash cards. floppys get hosed up too easy and the cams are that much bigger. with the smartmedia or the compact flash cards there are no moving parts as there are in the diskette type ones. More reliable for snapshots or shop-use with no moving parts to get messed up. They are almost always cheaper and smaller too.

just my .02 micheal

I use a Kodak DC4800 digital. You can't judge the camera by the pictures I upload because I have to edit them down in size to post and therefore lose a little quality. I am happy with it. It was rated tops for cameras under $1000 when I bought it last summer. 3.1 megapixel. 1.6 megs per photo at the settings I use.

Here's a very good website that reviews digital cameras in detail (and I mean DETAIL). It has a very good glossary of terms and explains what the features mean. On the left side menu, you can click on "cameras" then select the brand you want and look at a specific camera.

Also on the menu, select "side by side" and you can display a comparison of 2 or more cameras side by side, and can select from about 200 cameras.

It's very helpful, especially once you understand what the features really do and pick out the ones that are important to you. There are also links to discussion forums, news articles, and other useful information.

I'm also looking for a camera right now and the other good thing is to find a friend who's a real camera freak and grill him/her like a cheese sandwich.

Hi Mike;

I took a different approach. When I looked the the digi cameras, I was shocked at the sticker price. I then looked at the digital camcorders. after viewing all the features, I ended up buying a sony dcr-trv520. It is available for around 825.00 It has a optical zoom of 25:1 and two digital zooms 50:1 and 450:1 anything above about 300 gets a little blocky. The sony also takes digital photos and captures them on a memory stick. Oh, it also has a 3.5" lcd to view the pics and video. I will post a pic from it if you like

My brother has an iMac and it allows editing and posting of the video. you can transfer the photos also. it is quite slick. You can "grab" a frame out of the video and it looks just like a still, very nice feature. it has other bells and whistles. You might want to take a look.

Regards
Bill

It would all depend on the quality you require and what you want to use the pictures for. I have worked with the Sony with the removable diskettes. Nice but expensive, not what I wold want to use to take pictures while tearing something apart with greasy hands. I bough a cheap digital that loads through the USB port. Pictures aren't that bad, and if it gets a little dirty I'm not quiet as upset. Sony with zoom around $600 to $700, elchaepo less than $100.00 with software.

Like several of the others who answered, I have a Sony Mavica FD-73. I have had it for about six months, and like it a lot. No negatives I can think of, except that it's a pretty expensive model. I ended up buying a new one on Ebay and paid $490. including shipping and insurance, which is a good savings below full retail. Mostly, I like that the pictures go on a standard 3.5" floppy disk.

I see you are using a MAC...if you have USB support, I HIGHLY recommend a USB capable camera. The difference between serial and USB is tremendous. I personally have a Kodak DC 215 Zoom camera. It came with a 4 meg card but was a Christmas present and wasnt the USB model. After uploading a full memory card through the serial port, (27 pictures at mid resolution or 13 pictures at high resolution with the 4 meg card) I was convinced I needed a USB card reader. I picked one up at K-Mart for about $35.00 and instead of taking about 10 minutes to transfer, it is done without you knowing....it is that fast! So, whichever camera you decide to get I would DEFINATELY GET a USB model if you can.
My thoughts entirely!!!
Greg

I agree with the USB approach as I have the same camera as a gift but serial port conflict and time required to download made it almost worthless and almost unusable. Went to Best Buy looking for a USB card reader and bought a $150 48 Meg card with a free Jump Shot card reader that was said to solve my problem. Would not work, fooled with the stuff 3 months and called and asked anyone I thought could help, finally called Lexar the card maker and they said my USB card was not compatable with my computers USB as it was a newer USB format than the card. Sent the card to them at Lexars expense and it was upgraded and now all is fine. I later upgraded from 64 to 128 memory to speed it up and prevent crashing from overload. Works great now, card holds 180 photos at best resolution and downloads in seconds. Very happy with it.

I got a Sony Mavica.Model MVC-FD73. It is easy to use with my old computer, puts pics on discs in JPG format so just about anyone who has Explorer can look at them. I can use Disc-copy and hand out copies for less than reprints at Walmart. Some complain about image quality with the SONY but if you read the instructions and use the"fine setting" you will have 20 pics or so to a disc, and the quality is just fine. If you want to see some pic's I took with it, go to the FORD board and check out my post "wintertime Tractor hunting.. or something like that. Best feature is the ability to put on 3.5 floppy instead of an expensive media.Only the SOny does that as far as I know. The camera is a bit pricey, but if you internet shop for the best deal and bring a printout to your nearest Staples store you can get it locally for the internet price. ( plus whatever they figure the shipping would be).I saved $120 over the best local price that way.

I admit that I have no experience with other digital camera brands, but I chose a Sony Mavica because it writes directly to a floppy disc. No messing around with transferring your images from the camera's memory chip to your PC. You can get 30+ JPG images on one floppy. Lou[NE]

I have a FUJIFILM Finepix 1400 Zoom ,3x optical zoom, 1.3 mega pixels, came with a 4mg, memeory card, that I upgraded to 32mg card that I find very handy. It's not the top of the line but is adaquate for the uses I have. I would suggest going to your local photo shop or discoount shop and talk to sales people for advise on what would be the most affordable digital camera with best options for your dollar. I live in Vancouver Canada so most prices are probably not comparable to your area. Best of luck . Stan

I borrow a Sony mavica FD-73 from work. It uses the floppy disk so I can do a bunch of e-bay parts and just throw the disc in the box till ready to list.
