Sorry for the long post, but here's the situation guys. '46 2N with 8n engine, professionally rebuilt, front mount. The engine and carb were rebuilt about 1 1/2 yrs ago. Since then, I have'nt been able to use her much (less than 15 hrs), but she stays indoors all year. When I went to move her from the shed today, she would only keep running for about 3 minutes. Now when I start her, the only way to keep her running is to keep playing with the choke. Also, I noticed last time I moved her, after I shut her down, she leaked gas from the carb. Did FNH screw up the carb rebuild which I paid megabucks for? Is there anything I should be looking for here? I'm not too comfortable working with carbs. One other thing I noticed was the plugs were very black, except for #3, which was brownish, and the threads were rusty and stuck pretty good.
Any help would be appreciated, Rick

Hi Rick. When I bought my 49 8N in 1977 I had to adjust the choke to get it to run smoothly. I ran it that way for a couple of years. Once the choke was adjusted right it would run fine, although I knew this wasn’t normal. I tried adjusting then rebuilding the carb without success. I finally bought a new carb and manifold. That done the trick. It has run fine/normal ever since, without a glitch. I still don’t know if it was the carb or the manifold. The manifold had been welded due to a crack near the exhaust outlet. As they said, filters. Also drain the tank and add fresh gas, it is too old and varnish builds up. Add "Gum-Out" to the new gas and run it to clean out the econimizer in the carb. Don't leave gas in it that long without adding a stabilizer. But even stabilizer will not last over a real long period.

i would make sure the fuel is of good quality..after sitting that long the fuel could easily be spoiled and make sure the air cleaner is not plugged up.. in addition to what these other gentlemen are saying

The first thing to do is see if gas is getting to the carb in quantity. You can open the plug on the bottom of the carb and watch it flow out to see if it keeps on coming. If so, then try enriching the mainjet adjusting screw .5 turns at a time and keep track of where you started. If that don't do it, you willlikely have to go into the carb, not a big job especially if it has been worked on recently. There is a link in archives that will guide you thru it, no big deal.

If it has been some time since the carburetor was rebuilt it is possible that gasoline residue has been left behind and it is trying to plug up some orifice of the carburetor. Opening the big high speed mixture a half round might help. If it doesn't and you have a good supply of gas to the carb it needs to be cleaned again.

Gas dripping from the carburetor when it is off is common and not necessarily a sign of anything wrong with the carburetor. Always turn off the gas though when not using the tractor because the gravity system will cause the gas to leak past the needle and seat of the carburetor and could even fill the crankcase with gasoline if the tank is full when it leaks. This can cause engine failure if the tractor is started in this condition.

If you try to blow back into the tank with compressed air be sure to remove the gas cap first or you could very easily rupture the gas tank. This could be very dangerous!!!!!

I'd check the 3 filters in the fuel system first. (Any dirt in the bottom of the bowl?) The one in the elbow of the carb, and the one in the sediment bowl are easy. Blowing air, via 1/4" rubber tubing held up against the inlet into the sediment bowl, is one way of temporarily getting junk off the screen in the tank. Bob in NY
