I can't get my starter button to work after rewiring whole system on my 12 volt system. I must be missing something. What does the starter button do? I replaced it and see that it only works when in netrual but does it ground? Hot to the S on the selinoid turns over the tractor but how do I accomplish this? What is the concept here with the button? Nothing is on the 'I' but I see some people say use the 'I' but I don't think mine has ever used it. I have used the other diagrams to rewire and I think I am good but I am having a hard time understanding this. I have a single wire from the new starter button to the selinoid 'S'. Change to the 'I' does not work either. On one side of the selinoid there is the + battery post and another wire to the ignition and ammeter. The ignition goes to a resitor block to reduce for the 6 volts. **********************ammeter ************STARTER***ignition *************BUTTON**+++

It is an 8N front mount, 12 volt conversion.

The Push Button on the shifter grounds the conection to the Solenoid which gets it's power for the other side off the wire that goes to the battry inside the can over it. So if you are Positve Ground and you hooked the postive to the little treaded stud sticking out of the can the circuit would be completed to the Solenoid coil and it would close completeing the circuit to the starter and it would turn over. I am not sure I follow. I must have a mental block on this.

1. Left large terminal bracket to starter.
2. Right large terminal to battery.

Where does the rest go:

3. Right large terminal to wire to ammeter? 4. What goes on 'S' on to right?
5. What goes on 'I' on top left?

Sounds like you have a 4 wire solonoid instead of a 3 wire ( 2-large studs and 1-small stud) if it is a 4- wire you have 2 little studs and you will have to take power off the battry cable conection to one small wire and the other small one to the push button because it is not hooked up to the incoming LARGE wire from the battry inside the can to make it work. Am I right Dell? Mark H.

Alfred..... ....your 8N should have a 3-terminal tractor starter solenoid mounted so the little screw is hard to get to next to the engine block. Your neutral safety interlocked starter button down by the tranny shifter "grounds" the starter solenoid which electrically "hot" internally from the big battery terminal.

Howsomever, if you have a 4-terminal automotive starter solenoid, different rules apply and I won't tell you them so I don't confuse you. If you really do have the 4-term solenoid, ask for follow-up info..... ....Dell

Dell,
I have a normal 4 post 12 volt selinoid that I got at Tractor Supply. I see the same ones everywhere. On the selinoid was a small peice of paper saying not to use the 'I' if a three wire system.

1. Starter gets power from the bracket on the left side of the selinoid.
2. Hot + battery post and a wire to the ammeter is on the right side.
3. The button wire is on the 'S' small top terminal on the right. 4. Nothing is on the 'I' small top terminal.

Where am I going wrong?

Alfred..... .....ah-ha..... (the sound of enlightenment, grin) Well guess what? your N-Tractor OEM starter solenoid is and was a 3-terminal starter solenoid.

To make a 4-terminal auto starter solenoid work inplace of a 3-wire tractor starter solenoid, here is how. Connect a short wire (with proper sized terminals) from the BATTERY "+" stud to the small stud marked "I". Then from the small stud marked "S" connect to the main starter pushbutton switch next to the tranny shifter.

Should start if you remember to turn on the ignition switch (grin)..... ....Dell

I had to find a good ground when mine did that. Check your ground wire from your battery. HTH
