I just went out to do a little work. When I started my '49 all was normal presure came up to about 50 which is normal when cold,(50 on start up between 30 and 40 at operating temp and down about 20 when hot}then the guage dropped to 0 went back up to twenty and flucuated betweeen o and 30 after that. Now this is a tired engine has some blow by out of the crankcase vent and smokes a little bit but in the three years I have owned this tractor the pressure has always been consistent and the guage steady. Does this seem to be something to be concerned about gunk in the line? ,pump losing prime? I know this thing needs a rebuild but money and lanscaping plans won't let that happen for another 18 months.

Pull the oil pan drain plug and try to wiggle the pick up tube that is directly over the drain hole. If you can feel it wiggle in the oil pump where it is supposed to be tight you had better not run the engine any more until you have pulled the oil pan and had the tube re silver soldered or buy a new pickup tube.

To work on the oil pump you can pull the front main bearing oil pump assembly so it is easier to work on. Be a good time to rebuild the oil pump too if the shaft wobbles in it's bushing. Probably will.

Also be a good time to re ring at least since it will only require the head to be pulled since you are already in the bottom.

I would not run it until you have checked the oil pump pickup tube. It is close to complete failure I think.

Zane is correct about the oil pickup tube. But if it is tight check the oil pressure relief valve. If the spring is broke or something stopping it from seating (not likely but possiable) you will go to (0#) oil pressure. A long shot but worth a look.
I know it is hard to swollow but as Zane said don't run it as it is. Or your looking at a new engine.
