How much to hone hydraulic cylinder ???

I'm switching to the NAA piston and o-ring on my 8n and I'm not sure how much to hone the cylinder. There were plenty of scratch in the walls pretty much from top to bottom most of which weren't very deep. So I've been honing it using kerosene as a lube. I've honed it for about a total of 3 minutes while checking about every 20 seconds to see how it was going. Right now most of the scratches are out but I don't know if I should continue honing and risk getting it too much oversize or use it as is. What are the limits of honing and how do you know when to stop. How much of an oversize hole will the o-ring be able to handle. I can hone it until it's smooth but I don't want to find out after it's back together that I went to far and it leaks. This how the cylinder looks now. Any advice will be appreciated.

Hone it out until the scraches are very slight. Once you have it clean then spray a little w-d 40 in the cylinder And push your Naa piston in, be careful not to tear the o-ring and seal. If it goes in real tight. Put it back together. I just did mine this past weekend and it works great pick up 600 pound disk and let it set for 4 hours with no leak down.

My experience is that these cylinders act very much the same as brake slave cyls. Rough cyl walls are not good for long life of o-rings, but they will work.

On the other hand, too much honing will be out of spec for the o-ring itself. The manufacturer/parts store of the rings should be able to tell you how much oversize you can go before you loose the integrity of the o-ring seal.

As Dell says, you have to have a fine micrometer in order to measure the new bore and if you don't feel comfortable with that (or with being able to get a CONSISTENT diameter bore up & down the cyl), just lightly hone with superfine paper and put it back together.

Rick..... ...one of the acclaimed reason for changing to the NAA piston and "O" rings is supposedly the "O" rings are more tollerent of cylinder wall scratches and bore taper and hold pressure better.

Since I don't readily find a 3-point hydraulic cylinder specification, and I doubt that you would have a smallbore micrometer ennysway, I'd giver one more turn with the hone (finest grit if ya gotts it). You're not looking for the cross-hatched swirl of engine honed cylinders. So sticker in, and then grind a few seconds, turner off and remove and clean well with hot soapy water. Putter back together and goffer it.

If it works, you're ahead of the game ($$$), if'n it leaks too much, you're up on the learning curve for faster hydro-cyl replacement next time..... ....Dell

Wrong! Wrong! Wrong! Been there done that, O-Rings like clean bores!!!

It is difficult to tell the depths and severity of the gouges in your cylinder but based the photo I would go with new rings on the old piston! O-Rings do not respond well to those gouges and may not last long. Might want to finish with a finer hone with a little cross hatching.
