I have a 1950 8N side mount that I recently purchased. I have been going through all the systems, changing fluids etc. I noticed that the distributor oiler was missing, so I ordered one from Don B. I went back this afternoon to look and noticed after cleaning that the distributor base was cracked where the oiler screws in and about half of base for the oiler was missing....

Ok, so I pulled the parts manual and starting looking at the distributor, but it didn't look right. Over to the '53 distributor and voila, there appears the dust cover that I have on my ('50?) distributor. So, the long winded question is, how can I tell if my distributor is a '53 or an earlier one that someone just put the dust cap on? Can I get a new distributor base and if so, should it be a '50 or should I get the later style, or is there any difference?

Thanks for the help.

Thanks to all for the information. I am going to see if I can get a distributor base and rebuild what I have....I don't think the oiler will stay in otherwise.

Regards and thanks again!

The dust cover came out in late 1951 or early 1952. Even though it carries a NAA part number it fits all side mount distributors from 1950 well into the 60's. It is a real points saver in very dusty conditions. It also was very popular with N owners and many side mount N's were equipped with it. We put one on our 1950 8N as soon as they were available! By the way it was an option, even on the NAA and later tractors.

Patrick..... .....ya send me walkin' to check my side mount 8N. Ooops.... loose dist cap, no dust seal, inside of distributor gots weed chafe, hummm..... could haff sworn had a dust cap in distributor..... whats going on???

First manual, Master Parts Catalog, only shows just dust seal for NAA distributor p/n FAA-12239-A, Cover Assy, distributor breaker dust. 1953 NAA. Thats what you found. hummm.....p/n 8N-12106 looks like a distributor cap but Ford calls it "Housing Assy, (distributor terminal) angle drive. Well ya never know about parts nomenclature.....

Second manual, Assy Manual and Service Part Catalog shows no NAA parts at all but lists NCA-12106-A as Housing Assy, Distributor Terminal. ...BUT... it also lists p/n 8N-12261-A as Kit, Dust Seal, "details not available".....hummm.....and then 8N-12311-A, Kit, Dust Seal, used with 8N-12261-A..... okey.... Back to MPC.....

MPC lists 8N-12261-A as Kit, Distributor Cover.....hummm..... But doesn't list 8N-12311-A..... .

Well, lets try good ol'Don B, he has a distributor breakout parts list and pictures too. Ah-haw..... in Don's parts list..... p/n FAA-12239-A, Cover Assy, (Distributor Breaker Dust) 1950-1954.

This cross checks with the Master Parts Catalog, FAA-12239-A, Cover Assy (distributor breaker dust), NAA 1953; and consists of: p/n FAB-12267-A seal, (distributor breaker cover); p/n FAA-12268-A retainer, seal (distributor breaker cover); p/n FAA-12114-A gasket (distributor breaker cover to base).

Bottom line, YES, there should be a dustcover inside your sidemount distributor. Now I gotta go shoppin too..... .....Dell

The dust cap is OK, in fact it's pretty useful. I have one on my 52.

The base of the NAA distributor is different. You can use any sidemount body up to '52. There is a side distributor for sale on ebay right now, if that one is unusable.
