Looking for help with 9N Neutral Safety Switch

It used to take a bit of movement of the shifting lever to get it to a place where it would allow the starter button to run the starter...but little by little it took more and more moving of the shifter to find a place where it allowed a start. I always assumed there must be a neutral safety switch. Now, any amount of movement dosn't help...and the starter switch isn't running the starter. Is there a neutral safety switch? If so, how do I remove it? If not what else can it be?

Appreciate any help!

Andrew

actually, the switch you're looking for,is externally located just above the clutch housing. follow the battery cable from battery to switch. it's an old style push type switch, held by two bolts. remove these bolts, and the switch, you should now be able to test the switch by hand. there is a push rod in the housing that activates the switch ,and should be removed to clean and lubricate.---hope this helps.

You can remove the trans cover and look at the switch interlock, you may have something loose but you will be able to see it then. You may have a separate problem with the switch in that it may have burned out the contacting material inside it requiring a new switch. If the switch moves to contact position and no contact, I would suspect that. anyway an inspection by removing the cover will tell. I put the trans in neutral before removing cover.

I had the same problem a while back. I took it off and lubed it up.

Andrew..... ..its a mechanical interlock neutral gear safety switch. You just may have something loose. You will have to remove your steering gearbox to get to it. Remember, 9N's steering gearbox is also tranny cover..... ....Dell
