Hi Everyone:

It is great to be back - been without a computer for 3 months - talk about missing the forum. Here is the problem. I was plowing with my 2n and hit a hole and the tractor made a little pop in the tranny area then nothing. I can put the tractor in gear but no movement. The pto lever is like it is stuck in a mid point position between engaged and disengaged. The pto does not turn and the 3pt does not work. I was able to tow the tractor home from the field like it was in the neutral position. I checked through the oil fill plug by the shifter and can see the oil churning when the engine is running and it does not seem to make any difference if I have the clutch pedal depressed or not. I checked the archives for a couple of hours tonight and it sounds like my clutch disc needs major work and I need to split the tractor. I am also considering overhauling the old gal because the oil pressure has been getting so bad and I think it is time for a major overhaul. Does it make sense to do it all at one time? I would assume so. Getting back to the tranny/clutch. Does it sound like the clutch went????? ????

Thanks f

Could it be the rivits that hold the ring gear have broken. I've never been in the trans/diff area, so I'm not sure.

If it were me and I was thinking of rebuilding the engine anyway I would break the tractor at the clutch first and then pull the shifter cover to see what is broken if I found the clutch OK.

It might be possible that the oil is being churned by the input shaft turning enough from a little friction left at the clutch even though it is broken but not enough to turn anything else in the transmission.

Did you have it in gear when you were looking in at the oil swirling? If it were in gear the input shaft would not have been turning. If in neutral it could be turning but not enough to turn any other gear.

Be sure to have one wheel off the ground if you do much trouble shooting with the engine running. I have seen a clutch catch that had the lining off and cause the tractor to move. This can be hazardous to your health!

Rich, It don't sound good. You say it will not move in any gear, the PTO will not work but you can see the oil in the transmission being churned by the gears. If it were the pinion gear, you would have PTO.
The gear on the input shaft and the bull gear (large one)on the secondary shaft are the only ones common to all gears and the PTO. Drain the gear boxes and with the cover off you should be able to see what is wrong with them.
First while the clutch is diengaged look to see if the lube is being churned. If not you're clutch is probably OK.

Hold one brake pedal at a time while in gear to eliminate the rear axle, then take off the round inspection cover on the RH side of the rear housing and see if the drive shaft turns the pinion, if it does you need to pull off the LH rear wheel and axle housing to see if the rivets sheared on the ring gear.
