How bad can block be rusted before it is useless? I know where there is a block that has been sitting out in the weather for at least 5 years without a head on it. Some guy built a doodlebug and used N parts for it and the block, transmission and rearend casing are sitting in his side lawn. Can the top of an N block be milled to remove pitting?

Pitch,
Mine was cracked all over. I found one in a junkyard that had been setting on the ground for what seemed like 20yrs. The cam, valves and one piston were still in it. And boy were they stuck. It took 4 days to get it all out. Lots of hammering, WD-40 and sweat. Took it to a machine shop got 1 crack welded, cleaned and boiled out, and new valve seats put in. The top of the block is pitted a little but I'm going to put it together one day.

Jim

Take it to an automotive machine shop and ask to speak to the machinist...he's the one that can do the work and will know wheather or not he can save it...in most cases. Probably needs to be cleaned first, then magnafluxed to see if it has any cracks. Top can't be surfaced too much as pistons might hit the head. L8R....Fred OH
