Governor/Power?

Thanks to all for the help...but I'm coming back to the well.

Got my new '50 8N side mount running, changed all the fluids, unstuck the drain plugs, put new nuts and a lock washer on the pinion shaft (unplanned repair), replaced a bunch of seals, and the relief valve on the hydraulic pump, put her all back together and...she isn't running at full power.

I disconnected the governor and the engine runs strong (no load), so...I assume its a governor/linkage issue. I haven't had the governor off, but it seems fairly responsive. It does seem to "pull" on the power lever linkage when you rapidly apply full power...is this normal? Also, there is a hefty "z" kink in the linkage (throttle control/governor)....I don't think this is helping. It looks like someone bent the linkage rather than adjust at the control arm...

So, I am going back to recheck the fuel filters and make sure they aren't clogged and double check the gaps and that the firing order is correct, otherwise I may try and straighten the linkage arm... and/or take off the governor to see if anything jumps out at me....

What am I missing?

When you take the governor off look for flat spots on the balls and grooves in the races. There aren't any when new. When you get it back together make sure that the spring in the linkage is correctly adjusted to zero play and zero tension. Anything less won't do.

I think you are correct that the bend in the linkage isn't right and not helping things.

I agree that this seems to be a gov/linkage problem.

I agree the Governor is most probably the main problem. But may I add that there is a part called an "Economizer" in the carb. Although the filters may be clean the minute holes in this devise may be clogged. You may remove the carb to clean the fuel holes in it or try to run "Gum Out" with your fuel to clean it. In any case this cannot hurt and may help somewhat for total performance.
