Starter drive ?

I did a dry run installing the starter. Engine out it fit. Engine in it won't, starter gear won't go past flywheel ring gear. When I did the dry run the starter gear was engaged on the ring gear. Hassle is the idea of sheet metal U to hold gear back won't seem to work cause starter gear doesn't retreat down its helical shaft. Is that a function of the 450 rpm disengage or of a bendix that doesn't work. Or am I not lucky yet with this 40 lb puzzle part. Thanks, Prentice

Prentice..... ....to successfully install your starter, "ya juss gottta hole yer tung lakk tiss" (grin).

Yes, the starter drive must be in its "retracted" position. That is, all the way out to the end of the starter motor shaft. If it won't stay there, it is bad. Most report success using a wire brush grinder wheel to drive it home. There is some reporting success with a impact driver and socket to fit over the starter gear. (you have to remover the starter drive first)

If your starter drive is really bad and just not retracted, recommend the slightly more expensive "clutch" drive, its that much better..... ...Dell
