I have a 1939 9N, I have replaced all the wiring, distributor cap, points, carb, she will turn over all day, but won't start..... I borrowed a buddy's 1952 8N to catch up on some mowing, I drove it out to the field, shut it off and now it won't start, replaced the start button, start pull switch, battery, battery ground cable, selonoid, (acts as if no power at all)when I put a charger on it, for a boost it just chatters....helpful input would be appreciated...

I had the same prob with my 9N. Check your timing gears. Mine had a gear with 4-5 teeth missing. It would turn over but never start. I too replaced everything you did. Hope this helps

Hi Andy,I allso had the same problem.Be sure to clean all electrical contact's on the 8N and make sure they are tight. On the 9N,sometime's it could allso be poor gas flow,or none at all.HTH,Jay 2NSC

On the 8n sounds like either the starter is jammed on the ring gear or the starter is bad. Either way pull the starter and see what it does on the bench. When you pull it make sure you put nuts on the through bolts or you will develope new problems.

On the 9n do you have fire at the plugs? Nice quarter inch of blue white fire not a little orangeish spark? If yes do you have you timed it? If no what voltage do you read at the coil lead, does it vary cranking.

As Dell says, long distance trouble shooting is not for the faint of heart but the above ought to get it narrowed down.

Your mileage may vary

Andy..... .....There is many reasons why N's won't start and sometimes it is difficult to guess why from a distance when a lotta parts have been changed, I flunked mind reading, just ask my ex-wife.

On your 9N, check your compression and report.

On your 8N, sounds like a bad starter. Your 9N starter is a direct swap for 8N..... ...Dell
