Rick..... ...12 volts on a six volt starter makes it spin faster, creating more suck thru the carb and hotter sparkies and therefore quicker starting. Just don't grind away, should start in less than 5 seconds. If'n it don't start in 15 secs, find out why, or find out how expensive it is to rebuild an abused starter.

Remember, starter don't care, positive or negative ground, always turn the same way. Solenoid don't care. BUT 12 volt alternator absolutely INSISTS on negative ground.

Ammeter only kinda cares, traditionally ammeter indicates (+) for charge wheather positive or negative ground. You have to change the connections to the ammeter for negative ground.

Ignition point don't care. Condenser don't care as it is good for at least 100 volts. Headlights care, 12 volts on 6 volt bulbs, instant darkies..... ..... HTH, Dell

The coil cares, you need to change the coil or reduse the current going to the coil.
