Major radiator leak this weekend on 9N. No signs of any external damage. Seam must have given way.

Has anyone has success with radiator shops fixing major leaks in 9N/2N/8N radiators? I haven't used one of those shops in over 20 years.

If I need to buy a new one, I have a 9N and am wondering if it is the same as the 8N. I have seen them on ebay and they suggest they are all the same. They go for about $140. I wonder what would New Holand sells them for?

My 47 2n was leaking like crazy when I bought it, had it fixed, but still kept overheating and developing new leaks.

Checked the FNH dealer, they had two in stock that were priced $365!

I ordered one from Just 8N's and it fit perfectly and i had it in three days. Tractor runs a lot cooler now too.

For my money the comfort of having a new part is worth the $$$.

Bought one for my 8N. It leaked like a sieve straight out of the box. Needed the tractor bad so I had it repaired. Nothing like having to repair a new Chinese radiator.

I then had a bad radiator on my MF255. I took it to a shop and had it re-cored. They did an excellent job and it is a quality piece of work.

The Chinese job looks like you could sneeze in it's direction and blow a hole in it.

My palns are to take the old 8N radiator and have it re-cored by the same fellow and put it back on. He will sell a new radiator(made in the US) for an 8N for $167. I think the Chinese job was around $140.

Robert..... ...10 yrs ago, I went to get my 8N's radiator recored, (the fins rotted off) they wanted $200 to do it. Local Ford/New Holland wanted $160. I ordered it by mail for $140. I had no problems fitting it. I found it dumb that it was cheaper to buy new than to rebuild.

5 yrs ago, I went to have my custom built A/C radiator rebuilt by the same outfit that built it. They were still in business selling and repairing (rubber gasket top tanks) aluminum radiators BUT THEY DIDN'T REPAIR COPPER RADIATORS ANYMORE, seems the EPA put them outta business because the lead in the solder contaminated the water and was ENDANGERING THE SALMON. Salmon, the only endangered species you can buy on your grocery shelf. go figger..... .....Dell

Shops around here (Missouri) fix them all the time. If the leak is fixable, you may be ahead to fix it because I suspect the material thickness, etc are superior in the original. If the fixing cost is too much or to extensive, get a replacement. I just put one on and it was made in china, so who knows the quality. Yes, the 8 and 9N are the same. The original had a larger top tank on them also than the replacement.

Whether they are the same depends on how old your 9N is. The early ones had a non-pressurized cooling system. My 1940 is still original and cools better than my 1946 2N did! The '46 was pressurized with a new radiator. My '40 hold more water and is still non-pressurized. I wanted to keep mine original. I figured if the original was still working, I would keep it that way. On my tractor, it works better! I would pay to have mine fixed. Just my .02.

You are right, there is a difference in that the later ones are pressureized. Also I remember that the radiator caps are different size also. Yes, I would repair the old one if it is in otherwise good shape. Radiator shops are a dying industry with the new plastic tank/oring sealed modern radiators used on autos. Also the cost of shop labor is like everything else resulting in a throw a way situation!

I understand the new ones dont fit prorerly and modification is often needed, if your old one can be repaired I would go with it . Iv had two repaired ( 8 N 601 workmaster ) both still doing well after several years, one cost $ 50 the other $ 20 for repair .
